I have never actually thought of that.

I suppose...I feel there should be a formula.

I had to throw away a lot of my lipsticks, before. Before I had to do that, I didn't realize that I would have to do that. I mean I didn't comprehend how long it takes to make a dent in, much less use up, that many lipsticks. And that a good number of them would go bad before I could do so.

That's not quite logical since, if the lipsticks were much smaller, I would not have to worry about it. It is just that it bothered me to have to throw so many away. I felt it was wasteful.

After that, I started thinking in terms of a formula. How many lipsticks you could own, without ever having to throw one away.

It's subtler with shadows or other powder products since they last that much longer. I had a couple SK shadows go funny on me, but they're $5 apiece so it isn't heartbreaking.

Still I feel there is a formula for that too. If shadows last longer, you can have more of them, but it's not infinite.

I have 10 shadows now, right? I've made the most dent in the Vapour. Next would be Shroom.

Sable has hardly been used, since I can only line with it, and I line just the outer corners of my upper lids (doesn't take much shadow to do that). I can do a crease with it but that's a lot of makeup for me.

Swish has a teeny dent in it. Laven-dah!...I must use that more often.

Samoa Silk and Silly Goose are almost new so no dents there.

Damson has a teeny dent in it. Ditto Clover Pink and Taupe.

So--will I have to pitch any of these? They're all good shadows; I use them all. They combine well with each other also. But I have yet to know how long my powder shadows will last. I've been buying makeup since 1998 and, aside from those SK's (which I could probably have rescued if they weren't so cheap), I have not had to throw out a shadow.

Ergo...the number of what I own, is important to me. It's not going to be, for the next person.

The number, I feel, will be determined by how many of something I can own and use and never have to throw away any.

Now I know it's different for Dain. I think of her as more of a purist. :)

i.e. I think the number to her is irrelevant. If one needs thirty eyeshadows, then thirty eyeshadows it is.

But does one need thirty eyeshadows? Dain is convinced it can all boil down to one. Or two.

Hence it becomes more of a search for the Holy Grail. If you can own only two shadows, say, then those two shadows have to be the best, most flattering, most versatile shadows.

That's too mind-bending for me. :) I prefer the formula approach.

That is also why I'm tending to wait before buying any new shadows. How long does it really take to use up ten shadows?

Only the shadow knows...OMG what a bad pun.

Now it's your time. What is it about minimalism that appeals to you? How do you go about it?
