Maybelline Pure Blush
Comments: Tried this in "Pure Rose"--nice rosewater pink color. Nice texture, cool dome shape. But it was *gone* on me after a mere two hours. |

Johnson & Johnson Head to Toe Baby Wash
Comments: Yep, the same stuff you use to wash your baby! Found out about this gem from the beauty boards. Someone actually compared the ingredients in this to the ingredients in Purpose facial cleanser--the same. The Baby Wash is much cheaper. HTT removes makeup and is mild. Those with super dry skin might find it too drying. You can also mix it with other cleansers--I mix it with Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash (also reviewed), which I find too drying straight.
Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash
Comments: I used to hate those salicylic-acid acne products. The thing is, you have to use them regularly for a few weeks before you really see results. This stuff can be drying, especially if your acne starts to improve. I like how it works and its price, so I started mixing it with my Johnson & Johnson Head to Toe Baby Wash to make it milder, rather than shopping around for something else.
Oil of Olay Foaming Face Wash
Comments: I have used this since August 2000, and re-purchased once. The first time I used the sensitive skin formula. It wasn't in stock the second time so I got the regular one. I can tell no difference whatsoever betweeen the two except that the regular formula has a very faint smell that is kinda like Love's Baby Soft. Those of you with oily/combo skin that live in cold climates or use anti-acne products know that even the oiliest of hides can get itchy and dry sometimes. This cleanser is perfect for those times. It removes makeup and dirt with one wash, rinses clean, and leaves my skin soft. It also happens to be my body wash of choice during the winter. Yes, there are other moisturizing body washes out there but they are usually highly fragranced and I like the convenience of the pump dispenser, and that I only need one product for face and body. Plus, this product is pretty cheap, at about $4 for almost 7 oz., it is cheaper than many body washes and nearly all the other face washes out there.
Kiss My Face Citrus Cleanser
Comments: This product looked, felt, and acted like Crisco. I could not completely rinse it off, and had to use a real cleanser to remove it. |

Degree Invisible Solid
Comments: A godsend for nervous cheapskates. Much better than Arrid Ultra Clear solid which I used to use. Hardly ever "fails"--I think it did once (must have been a hell of a day). Plus, it's cheap, low-priced and the stick lasts a good long time. Nice low key scents. Update: 03/12/01 New scents! One of my only beefs about this product is that they had only a few scents (unlike, say, the old Lady Speed Sticks that had beautiful scents but no drying power). Just saw 3 new fragrances for this product. |

St Ives Dark Circle Diminisher
Comments: I seem to be the only one who loooooves this stuff, but I'm extremely loyal to it. I started using it after I had my second baby--*black* undereye circles. You get some results right away, then your circles fade more and more. In fact, after I'd been using it nightly for over a year, I noticed my circles actually getting bleached away, including this vein I have under one eye. Be forewarned, other beauty board posters tried this and reported extreme irritation. Fortunately I don't find it irritating. |

Jane Eye Zing "Shrinking Violet"
Comments: Wow...the color of this shadow is glorious--a unique matte light lilac. But, I swear to God, it lasts less than 1 minute on. A crying shame really. |

Cover Girl Tinted Moisturizer
Comments: I am on my second tube of this. It really evens out my skintone, with a wonderful texture & lasts all day. This is saying a lot coming from me, because I have not worn drugstore foundation in ages. I'm so glad I found this one, because my favorite Stila & Lancome foundations are over $30!!! I wore the CG this entire week, and I was completely happy with the way it made my skin look... Some women are not going to like the fact that mineral oil is one of the ingredients, but my skin has not broken out at all since I began using it.
L'Oreal Feel Naturale liquid
Comments: I looooove this foundation. The colors suit me perfectly, it's unscented and doesn't break me out or make me oily (it's not at all moisturizing), SPF 15, blends easily and looks natural yet is not too sheer...did I say I love it? Sheer to medium coverage, matte-ish finish. Blends much more easily than their Mattique, which I used to use. Mattique is OK but Feel Naturale is virtually klutzproof. |

Avalon Organic Botanicals Shampoo
Comments: I've tried both the Lavender and Lemon Verbena versions of this, they both smell incredible. (There is also a Rosemary one that smells just as good, at least in the bottle.) The Lavender is more conditioning than the Lemon Verbena (which is supposed to be a clarifying shampoo). As far as the formulas, not bad, they do make your hair soft and clean. Worth the $? Yes, based on smell alone, or if you're looking for a shampoo that doesn't contain "sodium laureth" or "lauryl sulfate" (my understanding is that these are considered by some to be bad for you, they are added to most shampoos to make them lather better). I'm not faithful to them though, I alternate with the cheaper Clairol Herbal Essences green.
Avalon Organic Botanicals Lavender Shampoo
Comments: It conditions enough that I don't have to use conditioner -- even in winter.
Clairol Herbal Essences Shampoo(green, clarifying)
Comments: This is best for oily hair...I think it would be too drying for any other hair type. It does not strip color. It smells really good and it's cheap. In winter I use it strictly as a clarifying shampoo; used daily, it would be too drying even for me. In the summertime I'm more inclined to use it almost every day.
L'Oreal Preference Haircolor
Comments: This stuff is great...people think I'm a natural blonde. They've fairly recently de-stinked it, it smells a whole lot better now. You can mix half of it to do your roots and save the other halves of the ingredients to mix later. Even then, it's becoming aggravatingly expensive. *sigh* If this continues I might try Garnier.
Smash the Finisher daily conditioner
Comments: I have Dain to thank for this discovery. It's fantastic! Never deep condition your hair again! A small amount (dime size) is enough for my bleached hair. I put it only on the ends, it would be too much otherwise. Ideal for thick, coarse, processed, long or damaged hair. Probably overkill for fine, thin hair that is not damaged.
St Ives Clarifying Shampoo (clear)
Comments: Just a note -- I also love Clairol Herbal Essences (green, clarifying). I discovered St Ives Clarifying (clear). Not only a bigger bottle (for a cheaper price), also has a great scent. I use it every other day, (usually in summer too). It cleans off the gunk off my scalp quite nicely, esp. with repeated use. It leaves my hair soft and tangle-free (as a non-conditioner shampoo can get). I am nearing the end of the bottle, and plan to repurchase it. (it's a big bottle -- 20 fl oz!)
L'Oreal highlighting kit (burgundy box)
Comments: I followed the directions very carefully and this stuff *dissolved* little pieces of my hair.
Suave Humectant daily conditioner (Humectress knock-off)
Comments: A qualified rant--this stuff might be good for extremely dry hair--and then it would be superbly economical as well. On my "combo hair"--oily scalp, bleach-damaged ends--a drop half the size of a dime, applied only on the ends and rinsed away, was far too much and made my life an oily misery. I tried mixing it with water, but this only reduced the fly-away control while the my-life-as-an-oilfield factor was roughly the same. |

Jane Barely Lips "Bye Bye Brown"
Comments: Sheer dark glossy red with a touch of brown. I melted mine down with a thin slice (1/16") of beeswax lip balm to make it last longer on. Straight out of the tube it's fine, just that you'd have to touch up.
Jane Liphuggers "Loco Cocoa"
Comments: I melted mine down with 1/8" slice of beeswax lip balm. Frankly I found it dry, plus I wanted to increase the staying power. But the color is extraordinary. It's pink, basically, but an extremely natural, your-lips-but-better rose-brown (with a touch of plum), somewhat shimmery. If you don't want to go through the hassle of melting with lip balm, just apply it over lip balm.
Lip Trip lip balm
Comments: I use this mostly for mad science, the weather around here is not harsh enough to really use it as a lip balm...the first ingredient is beeswax, it's expensive and a bit stiff and I don't think your lips could chap with it on. It's great for lippy melts...adds mammoth staying power and moisture, without excessive sheerness. A small slice will work for a whole bullet of lipstick (see the Makeup Science/Making your own lipstick section).
Maybelline Wear and Go "Go Cinnamon"
Comments: Another frankenmelt--this time with 1/4" of beeswax lip balm. I found this too intense even applied over lip balm, hence the melt. Cool dark red. It swatches absolutely brown on your hand. Well pigmented, lasts virtually all day.
Jane Barely Lips "Out of Apricot"
Comments: Actually a lovely pinky-nude color. But lasts less than an hour on. Come on people! Throw me a bone! |

Gerber Lavender Baby Wash
Comments: This smells lovely--real lavender--and it's mild, as you would expect. Cost is half of Johnson & Johnson's lavender baby wash. I use it as a body wash, besides as a baby wash! |

St Ives Fade Cream
Comments: I just repurchased this. It has 2% hydroquinone, the same ingredient and concentration found in Ambi, Black Opal, Esoterica and Porcelana fade creams. It is more expensive than all of these. So why buy it? It was the only one I saw that did not contain sunscreen and/or moisturizers. My skin is oily and acne-prone as it is. I used this last year to fade some reddish-brown acne scars I had. It worked brilliantly on these and faded some sunspots as well. I used it twice a day for around 6 weeks. I saw some results right away, then gradually my skin got better and better. Some extremely mild irritation, basically my face itched a couple of times. But then, if you have sensitive skin, you might be more cautious about using this. |

Ecco Bella eyeliner brush
Comments: This is something I just got, but it's good. It has a synthetic-fiber, perfectly thin, flat head, with the bristles cut at an angle. You can draw the same thin line with this as you could using eyepencil. Woohoo! By far the most money I've ever spent on a brush. My wash brush came out of a Wet'n'Wild $2 set of five brushes. |
