Five Minute Face

A perennial beauty board topic: how much--or how little--time does it take to look good? How little makeup can you wear and still look good? How can you shave those precious morning minutes?

Fortunately, the trend is toward more minimal makeup. Perhaps from necessity...the 21st century woman has little spare time to spackle on a face. Perhaps from progress...the modern woman expects to be taken for herself, not as some artificial creation. Perhaps, in its own way, an adherence to tradition...minimal makeup is, after all, makeup, and a concern about looking good in minimal time is still a concern about looking good.

Since starting this section, I have realized there is even a three minute face...and that some of us have actually worked out both, switching them depending on the time available!

Hi! I usually can never do just a five minute face because I get so carried away with the fun of applying makeup so it takes at least ten minutes. But when I'm *really* rushed, here's my five minute face:

-almay amazing lasting in med. on undereye circles
-cover girl fresh complexion on t-zone and to set
-revlon colorstay eyeliner in brown and curled lashes
-cargo topeka blush
-clinique blushing nude lipstick

There you have it, that's my rare five minute face. I usually get *inspired* and add eyeshadow or compulsively blend. I have surprising artistic tendencies when it comes to putting on makeup......who would've thunk it?

I usually do five minute faces every day, so any of my FOTD's would fit in here in this poll... LOL

anyway, this is what I would go for if I had f.ex three minutes:

ysl concealer
mufe powder
Mac yogurt
Lancome crayon khol in brun noir
Lancome definicils
whatever lipgloss I'd like to wear that day

perfume!

For me it's all or (next to) nothing...

During the week my face takes about 30 seconds. It's simply concealer.

During the weekend I spend more time on a face. It has to be more than 5 minutes.

This is kinda a glam 5 minute face. It sounds bizarre but it really worked for me one day when I was in a hurry.

Craploads of revlon powderliner Raisin to line the eyes, top and bottom
Craploads of revlon deep chili lipstick.

Maybe thats too strange for your purposes though? I really stepped outta my box when I came up with that one, but it worked well and I got tons of compliments on it. I love to flirt with a gothic look and this one kinda fit.

I agree with Anam - except with me it's choosing a lipstick - it takes me awhile.
My five minute face is best on a good skin day!

MAC Studio Fix foundation (any powder foundation or cream to powder would do - idea is easy blendability)
Light dusting of bronzer or blush (I'm way too pale without)
Mascara
gloss or tinted balm
If I do all that in four minutes and have one left: A smear of sheer gold or taupe eyeshadow - MAC Dune - cream or Benefit Nina's Nugget.

Under Five:
Benefit Lemon-Aid for undereyes
SU Translucent Powder
Either WTF? Sandbox, Jane Bashful, or Poppy Delilah as wash on eyes
Nars Orgasm Blush
Gloss

Over Five: (meaning forget about under 5 if I even use one of these, although they can be worth it)
LM Secret Camouflage
Stila ceylon green quad -- because I use all 4 colors in complex ways
Coup de Theatre mascara

This is basically my everyday face:

Lancome undereye concealer
eyeshadow
HR mascara
lipstick optional; if I'm really in a hurry I'll take a YLBB like Chanel Sirocco where I don't have to be super cautious with the application

"Sample" eyeshadow look:
a light wash like KAOS Stingray
Stila Rumba all over lid and possibly lining under lower lashes

Well...I have degrees of face, depending on the time available.

My skin is getting so much better, I now go out without my tinted sunscreen...I do go out without sunscreen (bad! bad!), I suppose I'll have to remind myself to put some on. I use the TerraSport one, it's perfect...no whiteface, no grease, no heavy feeling, no smell even.

Then there is the powder face...Almay Oil Blotting pressed, used as loose (it seems to last forever that way and I can't tell the difference on my face between it and loose powder).

I do lipstick...and I am lazy about that. I keep one in my purse and use that. When I'm sick of it, I rotate it with another one. Right now it's MAC "Rizzo" in there.

If what I'm wearing strikes me as kind of masculine looking...I have this olive green henley top that I like, but it's hardly frilly...or I have hats and somehow (possibly because they cover my hair) I feel I should wear more makeup...then I'll do blush. (Or if it's a special occasion or if I just look dead?) Lancome Blush Subtil "Rose Charmant." It's been discontinued but I'll replace it with another Lancome...unbelievable quality of color and lasting power.

Quick eyes: MAC "Vapour" as a wash, lined with Revlon PowderLiner "Brown Suede."

Perfume...strictly speaking it's not a "face" thing but it can substitute for putting on more makeup, since you feel instantly better and more feminine. For me it's Givenchy Extravagance, Organza or Ysatis.

I agree with Dain on the skin stuff. I'm lazy but I take the time to use my St. Ives Dark Circle Diminisher at night. Some people complain of it burning the skin under their eyes so be forewarned, but if you can use it, it does work. It won't make your undereye area flawless but you can get by without concealer.

Lancome undereye concealer
some foundation used concealer-like on uneven spots.
no powder
eyeshadow base (otherwise no point in putting on eyeshadow..)
Medium neutral eyeshadow like Stila Puck or Mac Quarry on lids and to line bottom lashes
Kanebo mascara
sheer lipstick, lipgloss, lipbalm or nothing on lips

Hi,
I have an under-5 minute summer face that I used so many times. It is my summer time face:
Stila - illuminating powder makeup. Rub on with the compact sponge.
Multipurpose crayon in Bronze : swipe on lids, blend; swipe on cheeks, rub in with fingers; line and color in lips. Add a little gloss.
Line top lids only with BB Mahogany shadow, or Cargo black eyeliner.
Mascara, top only.

Any other time, when I have no color, I dot on foundation; swipe on powder.
For eyes: Cargo black liner on top, smudge. Eyeshadow wash of light color, either MAC vapour or vanilla or BB stone shimmer
If I have on MAC vanilla or vapour I contour quickly with corduroy.
If I have on Stone shimmer I can leave as is or contour with fawn, a slight bit darker.

Cheeks - Stila pushup in blush flash
Lips - Chanel Glossimer in Blush, goes with everything, or MAC Twig

Definitely just concealer, powder, mascara and lip gloss. Actually, that is more like a four minute face.

  • Stick foundation, spot applied. Generally underneath eyes and on any red spots.
  • Curl lashes and apply one coat of black mascara
  • Natural looking lipstick.

Actually that's proably more of a 3 minute face and Ive gotten to the point where Im even skipping that most days.

Lets see, 5 minutes

  • same as above but maybe add a sheer wash of eyeshadow and a dusting of blush and some powder.

Do you want the colors I use? I'll give them anways:P

  • Stick foundation- Im a HUGE HUGE fan of EL minute makeup stick, the best there is, IMHO. Almays stick is just as good IF you can get a good color match, I cant.
  • Mascara-Maybelline Full&Soft or Jane Splashes
  • Lippies-
    • Jane Locococoa
    • Jane Rosy Outlook
    • Almay One coat in Mauve
    • BB Bare Lipstain (identical to Rosy Outlook, IMO. Slightly higher pigmentation and lasting power, but $17 compared to $3)
  • Eyeshadow-the now discontinued Jane Pretty in Pink (I have 4 in my stash though), but there has to be a similar matte pink/peach shade out there somewhere.
  • Blush-
    • Lancome Bronzer in Delicat (i believe this is also disc.)
    • Rimmel Tawny-beautiful slightly shimmery peachy/pink
  • Pressed Powder-
    • Cover Girl Fresh Look is an incredible product!
    • Maybelline True Illusion pressed powder, I like this applied with a big powder brush rather than a puff, has spf too.

HTH!

Interested in my 90 second face that Ive been doing most often?

  • moisturizer w/spf
  • curl lashes
  • lipbalm

  1. Spend the money/effort attaining good skin, if need be. Great skin cuts your face time by more than half. I can get away with a bit of powder (Aveda Dual) or tinted moisturizer (Neutrogena Sheer Makeup) and still be legit.
  2. Have everything you wear regularly at your fingertips. This includes tools. This is especially a good method for using up products.
  3. Use good tools. They make application much easier. Fingers do work fastest though, so cream products might be a consideration.
  4. Obviously, use colors that you know will look good on you, no matter what. Think sheer...
  5. Pencil liners are generally faster than eyeshadow used as liner. That is, if the pencil is smooth, creamy and blends like a dream.
  6. It may just be a personal thing, but if I wear any makeup at all, I wear blush. Livens up the face instantly.
My usual face consists of: (obviously this takes more like two minutes rather than five)
  1. Aveda Dual (smoothed on with sponge)
  2. blush
  3. lipstick
My five-minute face however is:
  1. Neutrogena Sheer Makeup or Aveda Dual (or both)
  2. blush
  3. either liner (Revlon Brown Suede), OR lid color (champagne, lilac, celadon shimmers)
  4. curled lashes
  5. lip color
Eyes add a great deal of time to the routine, when you think about it.

Shades I use? These are pretty universal and easy to put on...

  • Maybelline Chill the Champagne (sometimes I layer UD Midnight Cowboy on top, but that takes time)
  • Loco Cocoa
  • Neutrogena South Beach Lipstick
  • Jane Rosy Outlook
  • L'Oreal Effervescent
  • WnW Flirt
  • MAC Revenge Blush (as long as it's used sparingly)
  • Nars Orgasm
  • Revlon Brown Suede
  • most glosses, like Neutrogena's
  • CG Mink
  • UD Urb

  • Shu eyelash curler

  • HC super good lipstick in luscious -or- clinique almost lipstick in black honey

i think it's funny that the packaging for my mascara says "do not use in a moving vehicle," because if I followed that I'd never use it! (not while i'm driving! only as a passenger.)

When I have no time, here it is...quickly dot foundation stick around those troubled areas - around nose, chin, cheeks, dot on forehead - blend quickly. Then I use pressed powder to set. Next - Stila convertible multi-purpose color stick gets dotted and blended onto cheeks for blush, and eyes for shadow and blended. I use the bronze color - natural and goes with whatever I have on. Also it's put on lips - lined and filled in. Then I put gloss over it. Quick swipe of mascara on top lashes. That's it. If I have a minute to spare, I will line top lashes - just outer half and smudge. Takes less than five minutes, actually.

  • MAC Studiofix powder foundation (or any compact powder foundation - so easy and fast!)
  • L'Oreal Powder liner eyeliner - It blends so nicely and goes on so smoothly. I like the Prune color for my green eyes.
  • black mascara (won't go without this)
  • light shimmery neutral shadow - such as Stila Starlight
  • lips - probably a gloss like WTF? Goldberry Shine for a finishing touch
  • I can skip the blush, but if have a minute I'll use Lancome's Rose Bois or Stila Fade, both peachy pink brown colors that give a "lift" to the face.

Voila!

I think a good quick face consists of the following:

  • concealer- to cover any marks, blotches, etc.
  • a cream or gel type blush
  • a little powder for shine
  • a wash of champagne e/s from lid to brow
  • grey or brown eyeliner
  • mascara
  • a bright, happy lipstick to balance your face
