Hmmm...those boots look good.

FWIW, I favor the work boots. I dunno, I prefer the lace-up style to the slip-on. I have some slip-on boots...they're a sort of half-boot, I'm not sure what they're called. But my lace-up Doc's are more special. Just my $0.02.

About the Doc's...lessee...I've seen places that sell them online. The prices seem to vary wildly. I think it depends on the style you want...when I was doing a piece on shoes, I put links to the affiliates we had at the time that sold DM's. Overstock.com had some...limited selection but good price.

We do have a Shoe Page in The Mall; it has every shoe affiliate we have to date on it.

Then there are shoe sites we don't have affiliate links to. :) There's Zappos (sp.?) that I've heard a lot about.

You know I have never worn a steel-toed boot. Always wanted to, though. :) I'm not sure how comfortable they are or how practical.

Heh heh! I like the menswear look myself. It does look best if you balance it off with feminine stuff.

Or, what I mean is, I like the combination. Am I the only person who remembers certain images...I remember quite clearly, spreads I saw in Seventeen magazine when I was around 12 or 13 years old.

Of course I could never find anything remotely resembling the clothes in those pictures, in Norfolk, Virginia, back in the '70's. They just didn't exist in the local shops.

I remember this feature they did on combining rough clothes with feminine clothes. The idea is you'd take a denim jacket and wear a lacy top with it. Or you'd combine leather and silk. It all sounds ordinary now but back then, it was electrifying (to me anyway). And I've been doing versions of it ever since.

So--your men's clothes with your lace, or fatigues...fatigues are good. I can admit I got sick of fatigues at one point because Norfolk is a military town and you'd see the stuff all the time, in style or not.

But olive green is still one of my favorite colors. I saw this skirt I almost bought at Old Navy. It was a long, olive green, cotton skirt...a skirt version of olive drab military pants. It was $28 so I passed on it. Dang! I hate doing that. But for me now, it's not the most practical thing to own. I have nowhere to wear it to.

I found a version of it (much cheaper) at Wal-mart, but the cut was bad. It would have been worth it to buy the Old Navy one, given the choice.

Hummm...reminds me. I have some mending to do. I have this beaded bag...it's odd. Of all the things I've ever worn/carried in my life, I've gotten the most compliments on this bag. I'll take a pic of it later on. :)

Boots I want at TSC

I want either the work boots and/or the slipon roper boots. Its gonna be those or maybe a pair of Docs. I really should investigate the Doc Martins. I've always admired them from afar. I finally sprang for a real pair of Birkenstock sandals this summer and I love them. I usually don't wear shoes between spring and the first frost, that is unless I have to. Most stores frown upon barefootedness in general. That being said, I LOVE my Birks. I'm betting a pair of Doc Martin boots would be the same. I'm wondering how well the above boots would hold up. They should last, they're riding boots actually. Leather, about $80 or so a pair. The store also has a cool pair of womens work boots not shown there, but they're steel toed and I'm thinking that might be a little much. Crazy as my life is I really don't need steel toed boots. I could justify them as a self-defense purchase though.

I like wearing guys clothes. I like the whole look of mens clothing paired with long hair, makeup, perfume and really sexy underclothing underneath. Guys seem to dig it too. Nothing like slipping off the old jeans to reveal a pair of red lacebra and underpants. grrrrrrrowwwl.

bwahahahahahaha... I wear men's clothes too.

They are definitely better made and tend to be better-priced too.

I wore men's plaid shirts when I was in Washington State. It was the height of fashion there, being as Washington is cold as...okay, I don't want to say "cold as a witch's boob" or anything like that...cold as the dickens?

Boots are also fly in Washington--I know that style has not changed--again because it's frickin' cold!!!!!!! and rainy!!!!!!! Some argue as to which is worse: the cold or the rain. I maintain it's the overall darkness that takes the prize.

So--men's plaid flannel shirts, boots (Doc Martens type), baseball caps, and that particular kind of jacket--I have an Old Navy one. It's lightweight but it's really warm, it's water-repellent on the outside, and it has a hood. And it's longish. You need all of those items there, and it has become a style in its own right.

Mmmm...Northern California is eclectic, style wise. We have less of a meteorological reason to wear anything, except layers. That's especially crucial in San Francisco itself.

I've been wearing jeans...I have a lot of these. I wear the good ones first, and so on. If it's hot, I'll wear my House of Wal-mart sandals. If it's temperate, I'll wear these Italian black leather shoes I have. They're slightly too big but not falling-off-your-feet big; maybe half a size bigger than they should be.

When/if it ever gets cold, I break out my Doc Martens. These are the pride of my shoe collection. Are they warm! You can wear them in the rain too.

As far as tops, I have loads of these too. It's just a matter of a tank top if it's hot, something warmer otherwise.

I've next to forgotten what it's like to dress up. I used to, back when I worked in offices and went to school. I still have my clothes from that period of my life...I'll pitch something if it gets stained, or the elastic goes bad (anything made in India, the elastic goes bad), but most office clothes never go out of style.

What I wear these days:
Jeans
White t-shirt (from the mens department. soooo much cheaper)
Black thermal lined zip-front hooded sweatshirt
either hiking boots or red Keds sneakers

That seems to have become my standard daily uniform. Yes, I have absolutely no sense of fashion or style whatsoever. I probably shouldn't even be posting in the fashion blog at all! :)

I found some fabulous flannel shirts today. Where? TSC- Tractor Supply Company. Yes, its a farm supply store. You may now ban me from the fashion blog. :)
They actually have some decent clothes there. Its not the height of fashion but for sturdy, long wearing, warm, heavy duty clothing TSC is my first choice. What is that big red and black check plaid pattern called? Lumberjack? Buffalo plaid? I have no idea. I found 3 shirts I want there, the red check,a blue and a black and white one.
They also have some really nice leather boots both lace up and pull on. The boots are ladies boots but the shirts are from the mens department. I really hate to say it, but mens shirts are SO much better made then ladies. I have worn a ladies flannel shirt to shreds in one winter. Mens shirts last me more than just one season. I like the ultra-generous size of a mens shirt too.

I'm in a fashion rut these days...

Well the weather hasn't helped any. It's cold, but only in the mornings. By afternoon, it's sweating hot. Tank top hot. Not shorts-and-tank-top-hot but you get the picture.

So, oddly...I was looking forward to breaking out my fall/winter clothes. But I've barely put a dent in my leather jacket. I'm still wearing a denim jacket.

We Californians have to suffer so much. (Is there a deadpan emoticon?)

Okay let's see how this flies.

Well the suit, the camera, the computer, and I were all downstairs so I took a quick pic. The lighting is artificial--electric and flash. The suit itself is not shiny although it looks a bit shiny in the pic. It has a slight, very slight sheen to the fabric.

I have no idea where the top I wore with it went. That was an off-white, washable silk, knit mock turtleneck, sleeveless.

Pier One used to have tons of stuff like this. Typically not the best-best quality clothes, but inexpensive (they had sales after every season), ethnic stuff, always interesting and unusual... I used to go there all the time.

One by one they stopped carrying clothes. Oh yeah, they also used to carry jewelry and accessories. :p

Hummm...I do favor scrunchies with a "matte" texture--cotton velveteen or cotton, rather than say, rayon or other slippery material. It seems to me the slippery scrunchies (sounds like a disease, yeah?) slid out of my hair as well and I tried doing the elastic-under-the-scrunchie thing and got fed up with it, since the scrunchie alone should do the work.

Sandwashed silk would do as well. Remember sandwashed silk? I'm having an '80's moment...

Hummm...I should take a pic of the suit. Remind me. It got a little wrinkled when I wore it, but so what.

--J.

posted by TheBroadroom.Net at 1:49 PM (Pacific)

I beg to differ about the scrunchies. They can and do slide off my hair. Back when I wore them (seems like centuries ago), I had to use an elastic to hold up my ponytail and then put the scrunchie around it. And it never held my buns either. I very often need pins...

BTW, your suit sounds cute :)

Hummm...sounds very good. Good strategic planning.

I have been thinking about it on and off. I could do with a new skirt one of these days.

I think that because--same reasons. A single skirt can be used with many existing pieces. It can be trendy to make the entire outfit look fresh. And if you get sick of it :) well it is just one piece.

Just recently I had to dress up for something. Well I hit the closet...I have loads of stuff there from my office days.

I found this suit I had bought...it had to be seven or more years ago? I got it from Pier One back when they still sold clothes. It's a sort of beige, brown color, it's just a rayon-cotton blend of some sort. It has a shortish skirt and an embroidered, short jacket...sort of ethnic looking.

Well, it didn't need ironing and I was in a rush. I put this with an off white sleeveless washable silk mock-turtleneck, no stockings (it was super hot) and sandals.

It was the first time I think, that I felt truly comfortable dressed up. I know that sounds strange. I mean I had to dress a certain way depending on what sort of job I was doing but it never felt natural up until now.

It did cross my mind that having a new skirt (and preferably one that doesn't need ironing much) would make life simple. :) Because then, all you need to find is a top.

Not sure yet what I have in mind...

Ok, I went shopping today and was a good girl. I only let myself buy stuff that was on sale and on my "to buy" list. Soooo... I got a black turtleneck because the one I have now is falling apart and I'm sick of mending it. It comes undone where the turtleneck is sewn to the sweater and I'm not good enough at sewing to mend it without it showing. And yes, I use black thread to sew it back up. So I got a new one for 25$CAN. I almost got a camel one too but it wasn't on the list and I figured if I was to spend 25$ on something, it wasn't going to be a camel turtleneck. I had to get the black turtleneck in medium too because they were out of smalls. It's a stretchy style so it hugs my body almost like a small would have but the sleeves are little longer (they reach a little past my wrists) and it hits a little lower on my hips. Quite acceptable. And I can always try to shrink it.

I also finally found my mod skirt! I tried on a 5 and 7 and they both fit but I decided to get the 7 because I can sit it a little lower on my hips to make it a bit longer. Anyway, it hits at about mid-thigh and I got the green one. Green like the inside of an avocado. It's a blend of wool (70%), nylon (20%), and cashmere (10%) and it cost me 30$CAN! I really like that price because who knows when I'll get tired of such a short skirt and such a colour... I was already wearing the falling apart black turtleneck and black tights today (with the olive cord skirt, mind you) so I got a good idea of how the skirt would look in real life. Looks great with black but a white or grey turtleneck would work too. And I have this lavender-pink turtleneck that I think would look very cute too. Very colourful but cute. Actually anything in the purple or pink family might work. I'm going to have loads of fun with this skirt :)

And that's all! Overall very happy with my purchases and very happy I stuck to sale items that were on my list...

Check it out: "Cult" Jeans.

I know it's on our server and I know I'd likely never fit into a single pair, still it's interesting... It reminds me slightly of the "designer jeans" fad of the 1970's. Only, the pants are better this time around.

Hummm...I put everything on the bed. Then I stand on the bed (you can see my shoes in one of the pics) and take the picture that way.

One trick I've seen in magazines, is they take a picture of the clothes on a model. Then they erase out the model from the pic. That imo is too much work. It does give a good idea of how the clothes look on though.

Sheesh! I would say you're doing well if you can fit a size 12. Keep in mind though--different brands fit entirely differently. I've got these Guess jeans and they're cut for an hourglass type figure. Gap and Old Navy, are cut quite differently.

I'm not sure what is my favorite brand. The Guess ones are sexy. The Levi's are probably the most androgynous ones I have...they're like the older style of jeans. Something like J.Crew or Express falls in between.

Ok. Maybe a belt. A cool belt like the one Josephine posted would be ok.
I really like my old navy jeans. I could find another brands size 10 or 12 that would fit better, but I'm attached to those. A 12 falls off and a 10 fits me properly through my waist and rump but the thighs are too snug. strange shaped woman that I am. Like I need one more reason to hate my thighs.

Umm, unless you want to do suspenders, it's going to have to be a belt... Or, you could have the jeans taken in. Or do it yourself if you're good at that.

I looked at the pictures of my stuff. I had to put it on the bed because I couldn't find a way to hang it and the living room floor is too shiny. Anyway, it was all really well laid out on the bed and then the boyfriend had to get on the bed to take the pictures and it rumpled everything. We have a down comforter so it's easy to rumple... I'm going to try to figure out a way to hang things on the wall though. We have mostly white walls so it'll look better. I wonder how they do it in magazines... Will have to check it out.

Oh you've got to do belts!

I didn't like them either until I met the right belts. A belt has to be special. An ordinary belt just looks...utilitarian.

I even took a pic of my belt:

...before I figured out how to do close-up's. *g*

It's a Gap belt...maybe you can check out the Gap and Old Navy to see if they have anything that looks nice.

BTW you go girl!!!!!!!!!

Ok. Heres my problem.

My size 12 jeans are falling off of me. I can not keep them up. However, a size 10 is too small.

Any thoughts?
besides a belt. I hate belts.

Hummm...you are right. That does make sense. :)

I did get to go by Macy's. Eh. Nothing special. They had some 18 KT j-hoops. Then they had the same 18 KT hoops that I already have. Then...some knot earrings. Not bad but not at all what I want.

That's when I miss San Francisco. They had this place I went to a couple of times, when I was still going to City College. It was a wholesale place. Good prices, lots of stuff.

Wow...nude fishnets. Now that would never occur to me. It sounds cool.

Been thinking a bit and actually, I think it's more complicated than hair colour. My sister has brown hair too but she looks better with yellow gold because she has more yellow skin. The gold kind of goes with it. She also looks awesome in yellow... I look dead in yellow unless it's a straw colour. And yellow gold doesn't do much for me either. But I have a much cooler colouring than my sister. I have some pink tones in my skin and I think that's part of why I look best with the silver and white metals. I'm guessing it's a combination of hair and skintone. So a pink skinned redhead would look best with the whiter metals and the yellow toned redhead would look best with the yellow gold. Maybe.

I need hoops too. But I want them a bit smaller. I'm still wanting clothes though. I'm wanting but not buying. I have a hankering for nude fishnets as of now. They'd look cool with my knee-length denim skirt and knee-high brown boots. We'll see. I tried out my knee-high socks with my short denim skirt a week ago when it wasn't so cold. Looked cute but don't know that I would wear this very often. It's fun for a change. And I'm impatiently waiting for these cute sweaters at Tristan to go on sale. They have four pastel colours: pink, straw, blue, and green. All adorable and all would be great with my brown cords or grey pants. They have an off the shoulder one, a V-neck one, and a cardigan. Maybe a cami too. Not sure. Anyway, I want a V-neck and an off the shoulder but can't decide on the colour. I love them all! Ah well, they're 55$ each and I want them on sale... We'll see what's left then.
