R.I.P. Anna Nicole Smith

Posted by Colleen Shirazi, Friday, February 09, 2007 12:20 AM (Eastern)

The above pic, I've had on my old site for years now. I did a brief Google Image search today, out of curiosity, and found a slew of...cheesy images. A few nice ones such as this:

...and the classical Anna Nicole Smith icons, such as this:

I have mixed feelings about Smith. Of course she was beautiful, in the purest sense of the term: she was naturally beautiful. Yes she arose from humble beginnings; yes, she was a fellow Southerner. She actually did what the girls used to joke about doing: married a fantastically rich, fantastically old guy with one foot in the grave.

On the other hand, I don't find it too hard to believe the likelihood that she was also a drug addict, albeit the world's most gorgeous one. The current "Internet rumor" has it that her baby daughter was "born full of meth." Did the person posting said rumor care how true it was, or wasn't? Smith attracted no shortage of venom in her life, not unlike her predecessor Marilyn Monroe, perhaps for her dual American sins of sheer physical beauty paired with an unmoneyed background.

Anyhow, Smith is gone from us now. I see that one of the men claiming to be the father of her daughter has already put in a court order to sample Smith's DNA even before releasing her body to her family. Or at least that's what I got out of a quick Google News search. That is the depressing side of it all. It would have been nice to hear a word or two of regret, instead of that.

The most touching words about Smith that I've seen all day are from, not family or friends, but PETA:
