Um... there are just so many things wrong here...

I can't pick what exactly makes this so tasteless, but it cracks me up. The lead singer's shellacked do? The way that guy fondles his flower? The way they throw out every damn French cliché that one learns in first-year French? Erm... angel wings? Which goes to show, the French are sometimes quite without style. I can't but agree, Americans can be cheesy, but not as cheesy as some.

Though we don't do so badly by ourselves...

Positively an anthem for tragic youth. Intensely stupid plot premise + hot boy toy, sex me up! (but just do it with love) + oh god, is she spraying herself with Hilary Duff perfume? + mysterious lighting + bad dancing + fabulous shoes and clothes for the deeply insecure = bitch, please. You ain't fooling no one.

More trios for your perusal...

5. Narcissus: Inspired by antiques in a museum, the narcissism of art, and the washed out colors of early spring in which the austere beauty of paper whites are so welcome, rice paddies in the morning fog, mountain temples ringing their bells. (a) "dove", a very soft, soft grey shimmer (just a touch of taupe) with a lovely pink cast (b) "celadon", the ideal medium green, green-grey with a silvery cast and gold shimmer, subtle not harsh (c) "bronze", a deep metallic bronze touched with olive.

6. Iris: Inspired by the regal appeal of purples, Venice, and the evening splendour of irises in an old-fashioned garden, I tried to capture the mystery of violets by offering classic but complex shades. (a) "satin", a shimmery champagne blend of peach with pink (more peach) with plenty of gold, a warm accent (b) "velvet", plum-brown with a touch of rose and flecks of gold (a tiny bit of green shimmer to keep it from reddening), lots of depth (c) "amethyst", a coolly rich and dark purple, grounded by a tiny bit of brown and grey (too keep it from being too strong), a sprinkling of red and gold and blue shimmer.

I think Hilary Duff is cute, but that's a dull song. The video looks to be a pastiche o' Madonna...interesting...because for decades, male singers could be described as "doing Elvis." I suppose Madonna is the female Elvis?

Of course Hilary Duff is cute! But she's trying too hard to be sexy, and can't pull it off. That is the problem. People should stick to their strengths.

Hi Dain,

The French entry in the Eurovision this year was very ironic :) I know, because I was a member of the jury. This band normally belongs to a totally different musical genre, but they have obviously joined the recent trend where famous rock bands participate in the very cheesy Eurovision Song Contest just for fun :)

Funny, both videos feature pink satin jackets.

lol! I didn't catch that.

I knew that, actually. But it is still a very trashy song and video, intentional or no, and that was all I was attempting to demonstrate.

Hi Audrey!

I love cheese...the cheesier, the better. I maintain that Europeans do cheese way better than we do. Possibly because we don't know when we're being cheesy. lol

That is very cool, being on the jury for the Eurovision contest.

My fave is still Boom Boxx Balla Da Li. I challenge anyone to come up with a better dance tune than that.

I actually think the France Eurovision is amazing. You can see the lead singer trying not to crack up. I'd like to make that clear. Gee, I'm allowed to make fun of bad art, aren't I?

I miss bad art. That is something I associate with the 1970's.

I'm sorry - I just wanted to share some "fun facts", that's all.. :) Hope I didn't offend anyone by butting in.

Not at all! In fact, I'm really jealous that you got to be a judge at Eurovision... it must have been so fun.

dain: Oh you wouldn't *believe* the amount of cheese... :D Anyway, this contest is more than 50 years old and everyone has an opinion about it, positive or negative (in my case, it is my fascination of anything cheesy that has kept me in the jury for 11 years now. Plus, it's related to my job). I wish you all could watch it in the US! :) Luckily, there is YouTube.. Look for "in my dreams" (Norway 2005) or "Hard rock hallelujah" (Finland 2006, which actually WON). And of course, ABBA 1974, "Waterloo". And Dschingis Khan, Germany, 1979. Hehe. But it's not all cheese - some tunes are rather good, but they rarely win. Spain 1989 is one of the great ballads of our time IMO, performed with true passion from the singer Nina, but didn't win of course. (here's the music video, a little more "tamed")

colleen: Thanks, nice to be here again! Keep blogging! I like the combination of blogs & boards.
