LP's Cream of the Crop: Face

Posted by Dain, Monday, July 16, 2007 12:13 AM (Eastern)

To continue, with products for the face.

Above: My personal "face" essentials of late, Clé de Peau Concealer and NARS Sin Blush.

CONCEALER
Nothing original to say here, Clé de Peau makes the best concealer on the market. It may be expensive, but one tube lasts forever (mine is still going strong after three years, a conservative guess is a year and a half), and it obliterates fatigue but has an invisible finish, without the need for complicated technique.

FOUNDATION
This is an interesting question: I don't really wear foundation, though I have tested quite a few. No matter, women don't like to wear the stuff these days. For skin that requires dewy, minimal coverage, I very much like Almay Line Smoothing Compact Makeup, for the money a good similitude to Chantecaille Real Skin (my personal favorite). For those who prefer a liquid, I would suggest MAC Face & Body Foundation, an industry standard, with good reason. For oily skin, Aveda Inner Light Dual Foundation is absolutely impeccable; it has a natural, not cakey finish, and the coverage is adjustable depending on how it is applied. And for full coverage, Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, which doubles as concealer, can't be beat.

POWDER
Caron Poudre Peau Fine, with its gorgeous Bulgarian rose scent, is super finely milled and imparts an unbelievable finish that adds light to the face. It comes in a brilliant array of colors, in two concentrations, regular and sheer (the regular can double as a light foundation). The best powder on earth; T. LeClerc has nothing on this stuff.

BLUSH (CREAM)
Becca Creme Blush is heartstoppingly expensive, especially for so little, but it really is the best. The creamy formula is supremely blendable, a little goes a long way, is surprisingly long-lasting, and comes in the most skin-flattering shades. Amaryllis is universal, a Benetint-like shade of red rose but appropriately muted for a believable flush. Turkish Rose is extremely muted (rosy nude) for the pale, milky complexions while Lotus (rich purple plum) is perfect on dark skin tones. But my favorite, perhaps my favorite blush of all, is Wild Orchid, a cool rose with mauvey undertones.

BLUSH (POWDER)
Neutral, no-brainer, universal blush that looks good on everyone: La Femme Golden Dew Amber (Nectar Peach is also quite famous), a shade of much complexity that must be worn to be believed. For those who prefer a flush with more color, I think NARS Desire (a bright pink is surprisingly neutral) does well by lighter skin tones, while MAC Fleur Power (pinkish coral) is fantastic on deeper skin tones. And for that china-doll, in-from-the-cold effect, I adore NARS Sin (rose-mauve-berry with gold flecks).

BRONZER
For just a touch of the sun, NARS Malibu Multiple is wonderful, while Guerlain Terracotta makes shades for everyone.
