Posted by Dain, Saturday, July 21, 2007 12:30 AM (Eastern) Perfumes are like outfits, in that you put on and wear a persona through the day, and that every woman needs a wardrobe* (to extend the metaphor) suited to her style. Perfumes may inspire poetic descriptions, but I'll keep that to a minimum and profer instead practical idioms. I've chosen as the inspirations all women I admire, except for the masculine, for which I've chosen eye candy. TOWN ![]() ![]() The aldehydes of CHANEL are as signature in perfume history as Guerlinade or Mousse de Saxe. You can always tell a CHANEL scent; these days it's become the epitome of sophistication. No. 19, which features iris and oakmoss as dominants, is my favorite. I cannot imagine anything more elegant than No. 19, quod erat demonstratum. COUNTRY ![]() ![]() L'Occitane Eau de Miel is the prettiest thing, pure charm: nectar, meadow flowers, sunshine, hay. I even like its ephemerality (it's alcohol free), it takes all the aggression out of traditional perfumery. SMART ![]() ![]() Perhaps long ago the wisewoman at Delphi would anoint herself with precious myrrh (highly improbable, people in ancient times must have stunk to high heaven). Caron Parfum Sacré, therefore, is aptly named. A rose wrapped in clouds of incense, drying down into the soapy residue of a fragrant bath. SEXY ![]() ![]() Nothing is sexier than tubereuse, nothing. It practically slays men as they stand. Serge Lutens Tubéreuse Criminelle is aggressive, feminine, gorgeous, perfect. I have wanted a bottle of this for AGES. MASCULINE ![]() ![]() I can just imagine the kind of man that might wear Diptyque L'Ombre dans L'Eau: beautiful, quiet, intelligent, impeccably attired, straight out of the pages of L'Uomo Vogue. This crisp green rose is equally tasteful and surprising, a far cry from the hairy-chested he-man colognes that glut the market. *This is currently my minimalist's wardrobe of perfume. I'd only add Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan (smart AND sexy) and BVLGARI Blv Notte pour Femme (town). Labels: cream of the crop |

July 21, 2007 2:58 PM,
Mmmmm, tuberose. It's fantastic. I'm thinking of getting the Diptyque one; haven't tried the Serge Lutens one.
