Posted by Dain, Sunday, August 26, 2007 1:16 AM (Eastern) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pastel is a paler tone, usually achieved by mixing a great deal of white or beige into the pure color. It is also conceivable to use, say, silver, but you'll see it more with blues or greens. Often, pastels are sheer, or milky, because full coverage pastels can be rather chalky. A chalky pastel is harsh, but most pastels are quite soft, which accounts for their popularity: a pastel green is mint, a pastel blue, sky blue, a pastel grey, dove grey, a pastel brown, beige, a pastel purple, lilac, pastel yellow, lemon, pastel orange, peach. Black and red are not considered to have pastels, because when you mix them with white, you get pink and grey, which are for some reason considered colors unto themselves*. Pastels are particularly pretty, innocent rather than aggressive, ethereal, whatever. They lighten the intensity of a shade, so equally they lighten the intensity of a look. If you're interested in trying a new color, a pastel may be a good place to start. *This is curious... For example, there are SO many kinds of blues (navy, periwinkle, cornflower blue, aqua, sky blue, sapphire, cerulean) and they look very different from each other. I mean, the difference between aqua and sapphire is as huge as the difference between red and pink, but we don't separate them, they're both blues. It must have something to do with the way the human mind is ordered. All images courtesy instyle.com. Labels: terminology |
