Terminology: Shimmers, from Pearl to Frost (FINISH)

Posted by Dain, Monday, August 20, 2007 8:55 PM (Eastern)

Above: Shimmers in increasing intensity, from top left going right, pearl, shimmers (lipgloss and eyeshadow both), and frost. I've deliberately chosen colors similar to each other to show as much differentiation as possible.

Shimmers, the umbrella category for metallics, glitters, and iridescents, are a very common finish, and rightly so, everyone thinks they're pretty. Mattes don't reflect light, shimmers do. The softest, pearl, gleams just a little bit, with relatively dull, fine particles, sometimes mixed with matte particles. On the other end of the spectrum, frost has a brilliant shine, with the coarse particles, generally unmixed with matte particles for a concentrated effect. Shimmer is anywhere in the middle, as well as a generic term for shiny particles*. A soft shimmer is probably the most flattering finish for eyeshadows in particular, but as with any extreme, a frost should be approached with caution because it can look harsh, is more likely to crease or "migrate", and settle into fine lines. Shimmers differ from metallics in that they are mixed: every particle of a metallic is the same, while one can have a creamy brown lipstick with gold shimmer, or a combination of pink-peach-gold shimmers.

*There are other, more infrequent words to describe shine, nearly all of them have "gl" in them from some old Germanic derivative: glimmer, glint, gleam, glitter, glisten, glossy, glassy, glitz, glaze, glow. Not all of them are associated with shimmer, just shine.
