I love lingerie—it's a small, secret luxury, and my appetite knows no bounds for silks and lace and cashmere... In spite of that, it's rare to see anything but "cheap manmade lace" on clothes, but you can certainly find among lingerie if you are willing to put up with the price. Probably none of these items are realizable, but for some reason I don't really seem to mind the idea of splurging on lingerie. Maybe it is because lingerie is different from other clothes in that it's about touch; you can fool the eye when it comes to lesser quality materials, but not the fingers.
Carine Gilson makes the rarest lingerie in the world: handmade lace, couture silks, custom hand-dyes. Just look at this exquisite ice blue bra ($430) (the chemise featured below is also from Carine Gilson). I don't have any use for anything utilitarian, as I'm small-chested, with the exception of a black bra ($199), which I consider essential. It's neutral but sexy, and if you wear one under a sheer shirt, it doesn't look frumpy but rather as if you did it on purpose. Plus, it never really looks dirty. I also wear black underwear, for much the same reasons (Victoria's Secret low-rise bikinis, 5 for $25)
You may scoff, but I actually think a silk chemise ($756) is the most comfortable way to sleep. Silk is so airy and soft, it's like wearing nothing (pants are constrictive). It doesn't hurt that it looks hella sexy, either. When it gets cold, I layer a loose, ultralightweight silk-cashmere top ($350), which is soft enough to sleep in.
About the house, I wear the same stuff I sleep in. For extra comfort, there's nothing quite like an extra dose (or two) of cashmere, slippers (with rosebuds) and a creamy robe. It also lets me leave the house, if only for the mail.
I guess swimwear is best categorized under lingerie. I'm not fussy about bikinis, I think this lavender crochet bikini ($50) is cute and affordable. I'd wear it with the K. Jacques St. Tropez "Icare" sandals below (I mean obviously, I'm not gonna wear boots with them).
The idea of the black bra as a staple is ingenious. I have some sort of skin-colored ones and some black ones, and some other odd ones that were on sale...when the odd ones wear out, I'm planning to replace them with more black ones. (I own a lot of bras for the same reason I own a lot of socks and underwear...there's tons of laundry to do, and these are the items that run out quickly.)
Oy I know... the point at which one must do laundry is when you run out of underwear. But a black bra helps. It doesn't get as dirty or look as dirty as a white or nude one does.
