Lookbook: Polished

Posted by Dain, Thursday, September 20, 2007 4:58 PM (Eastern)

Above: Makeup from some long ago issue of Allure, I believe for some fall Michael Kors show. Chocolate and taupe are classic neutrals, here featured with nude lips. I've recommended berry, below.

This is a close cousin to au naturel, but the intention is somewhat different. Makeup is visible but not to the point that it draws attention to itself. This is what you might consider a "work look": classic, about medium in intensity for everyday versatility. It's rather like a white buttondown or black pumps, never fails to look appropriate regardless of age, gender, figure, or taste, but the variations are subtle and harder to follow. As such, I find my combinations inadequate to cover the breadth of possibilities, so ultimately, I leave it in your hands to decide upon the best for you.

THE BASICS
  1. face: In addition to concealer, a touch of foundation is a concession to formality, as ties are to men. There's no need to go overboard, however, light coverage will do, such as MAC Face & Body Foundation, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, or my personal favorite, Caron Poudre Peau Fine. A lighter application of blush for a more professional setting, a heavier flush for a romantic look. It is a function of balance; I wear less on the eyes and more on the lips, so I prefer stronger blush.

  2. classic eyes: Perhaps this is where the "medium intensity" is most visible. With natural makeup, you err on the side of the absolutely essential in terms of enhancement: defined brows (but of course), intensified lashline (I like a combination of L'Oréal Carbon Black Voluminous plus L'Oréal HIP black gel liner to tightline), and perhaps a wash of fleshtone shimmer. None of it really looks like makeup, just more structure, more lashes, more light, respectively. Polished makeup merely builds on this by adding a soft, neutral wash (or, well-blended pigment in the crease) and thicker, smudgier eyeliner.

  3. berry lipstick: There's no real necessity to foundation or eyeshadow. Forgo them, and no demon will drag you down into the pits of hell. Just think of it as turning the volume up a notch. Likewise, there's no harm in wearing a rosewood YLBB, but put berry lips into your consideration, not so bold as red but richer than pinks.
OPTION 1
The most classic, no-fail pairing: rose and chocolate. NARS Nepal makes a beautiful wash, with MAC Teddy Eye Kohl smudged around the eye. For lips, a dab of Kevyn Aucoin Enchantaberry The Expert Lip Tint, which has my vote for the ultimate universal lipcolor (a bit of rose, a bit of berry, a bit of brown, a bit of red).

OPTION 2
A warmer alternative, especially stunning with blue eyes. NARS Key Largo, with its soft peach and amber shimmer, is perfect, especially paired with the spicey warm berry-brown of Lipstick Queen Saint Berry. A slick of black liner adds sex appeal, but is not necessary.

OPTION 3
Cool it down with pewter shadow, which pairs excellently with wine-stained lips. I recommend Shu Uemura ME Brown 850 and Cover Girl Wine Shine TruShine Lipstick. You can strengthen this look with navy eyeliner, like Laura Mercier Deep Night, but I'd switch to a softer lipcolor, like my favorite, NARS Gothika Lip Gloss.
