Posted by Dain, Monday, September 17, 2007 6:15 PM (Eastern) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is a surprising variety in blues, the palest being ice blue and the deepest being prussian blue. Baby blue is brighter than ice blue, sky blue is even brighter, robin's egg blue even deeper. Azure is that bright yet rich, happy, pure shade that the sky is on a beautifully sunny day; cornflower blue is a muted version of azure, and slate is so muted that it's equal parts grey and blue. Sapphire is the jewel tone of the true blue, or royal blue, while blueberry is deeper and muted. Navy is deep, midnight blue, even deeper, and prussian blue is so dark it appears black. Blues with purple undertones include: cobalt (somewhere in between sapphire and navy, with the barest hint of purple), periwinkle (hovers somewhere between azure and lavender), cerulean (like cornflower blue, but very subtly lavender, not as much as periwinkle), ultramarine (very bright, deep, rich blue, slightly purple-hued), indigo is dark, purplish and blue. Greenish blues are: aquamarine (watery, light), aqua (deeper, an azure with green), turquoise (even deeper than aqua), sea blue (think blueberry with green), teal (mentioned in the green family, but can be considered a blue).
