Terminology: Purple (COLOR)

Posted by Dain, Tuesday, September 18, 2007 8:08 AM (Eastern)

Above: a lilac with tendencies towards lavender, exceptionally versatile (in this case quite reddish) berry, dusky violet, and a gold-dusted plum. These are such important shades that nearly every line will feature them in one form or another.

Purple is a magnificent and exceedingly popular shade, and with good reason. It works on everyone. The shades above are surefire hits on almost everyone. Pure purple is grape, or sometimes violet or its jewel-tone cousin, amethyst, but there are many incarnations, many of which are actually useful in cosmetics. Lilac is the pastel version, lavender is deeper, usually with a cool, bluish cast, usually muted by gray (though it can be taupe instead). Heather is soft light-medium shade, very muted, usually with a touch of brown or pink. Orchid is brighter shade, equal parts purple, and equal parts pink. Iris is a medium-deep vibrant blue-purple. Reddish purples run the gamut from the brightish, extremely red berry, to the shade in between, wine, to the shade only touched with red, plum. Eggplant (or the French, aubergine) is a dark purple, usually tempered with a tiny bit of brown. Black cherry is an almost black purple. Blackberry looks black, but tends to be more brown than black cherry. Sheer blackberries go on rosy.
