Posted by Dain, Tuesday, October 23, 2007 2:01 PM (Eastern) ![]() In truth, a buttondown is more useful in a more casual fabric that requires no starching or ironing, but it is certainly a less yielding cotton than The Simple Tee. The Crisp Buttondown is perhaps equivalent to The Casual Pant, as preppy classics, but more importantly, they are both the intermediate between the extremes of casual and formal, and, as I've said before, dresses up (add a pencil skirt and heels) or down (jeans). Fit is important: the shoulders should be exact, easy cuffs that roll up for the casual look above (but, if you like the formality of a French cuff, by all means, go ahead) and the torso should graze the figure, neither too baggy nor stretching at the seams. The examples above demonstrate the appearance of good fit (albeit on skinny models). Though perhaps The Crisp Buttondown is a sort of simplified blouse, I've made them separate because one tends to wear more ornate blouses with a different purpose. Everyone will benefit from classic white, but they really do come in virtually every stripe, check, pattern, and color. As it suits ye. Personally I have: basic white (but I think in time I'll seek one with something subtly feminine, like embroidery), a casual sheer mint stripe, and a slightly more polished lavender/grey stripe.
