Posted by Dain, Saturday, October 20, 2007 9:15 AM (Eastern) ![]() Even if you don't need a spate of suits for work, at least one pair of well-tailored trousers is a wardrobe essential. This is the dressiest option, invariably worn with a pair of good heels, so hem them somewhat longer than The Blue Jean or The Casual Pant (a good rule o' thumb is 2 ½ inches longer than your flat-footed inseam). Choose one with a moderate-to-low rise, a flattering seat, and a roomy leg, in a fabric with beautiful drape that does not require too much delicate handling. The classic incarnation of The Fancy Trouser is a black utilitarian wool-blend, but many other options are open to you, and not just among other neutrals (navy, grey, brown, beige). For summer, or for sunny climates, a tropical-weight sky blue or a cream seersucker would be so refreshing. For cloud-oppressed, wintry climes, there are so many rich plaids, tweeds, herringbones that are warm to wear and add tasteful interest to your outfit. I own a pair in a greyish taupe plaid with a green thread, and I find it satisfactory for my needs, which are not particularly professional. I wear it with a jacket for interviews, with a snowy cableknit turtleneck and sturdy boots to beat the worst of the chill, and with a black tee and ornate jewelry for a sort of cooler-than-thou menswear chic. If your dress-code at work is particularly conservative, you may need less of The Casual Pant and more of The Fancy Trouser. Labels: an array ecumenical |
