Posted by Dain, Sunday, October 21, 2007 9:39 AM (Eastern) ![]() Since skirts run a gamut of styles—casual denim, baroque velvet, summery cotton, shiny evening, sexy leopard print, mod miniskirts—I've called this (if somewhat vaguely) The Neat Skirt, one of more classical bent. Though I would encourage women to shun anything too casual, which will only serve during warm-weather antics at best and make you look like a teenage reject at worst, and embrace of the greater possibilities for embellishment with skirts, one must take care not to choose a skirt that dominates an outfit, which will drastically reduce the probability of mixing-and-matching. It is a tricky line to walk. There are two main types of skirts that will last you through the trends of the ages: a-line and pencil. A-line skirts add curves to slim hips by emphasizing a tiny waist, while a pencil skirt hugs curves almost dangerously. A-line skirts can be worn with flats, but pencil skirts should without exception be worn with heels, and it is helpful sometimes to buy a size smaller. A higher waist will make legs look longer, and length-wise, the hem should hover at the knee. Anything that hits at the calf looks frumpy, and while miniskirts are very popular... well, it's a style best reserved for the leggy under-30. Moderation in all things, even your skirts, is best. A handful of versatile skirts rounds out a wardrobe very pleasantly. If it gets cold, the addition of some tights are adds texture and/or color, and some may be worn with boots. Personally, I'm not sure what mine shall be... I'm reluctant to cast my lot with anything with too much embellishment; I gravitate towards plain bottoms and busy tops, so maybe just two expressive ones (one evening, one casual), with perhaps two utilitarian ones (one basic navy, one tweedy suit skirt), plus a long one for summer, will do. It still seems too much to me. Labels: an array ecumenical |
