Posted by Dain, Sunday, October 28, 2007 1:04 PM (Eastern) ![]() It is certainly possible to wear The Soigné Cardigan as one would The Fine Knit, but I prefer to think of it as an overlayer, because even when buttoned closed, the fit is often inferior as a top. As such, I recommend plainer styles (though I have included a couple of embellished examples because I thought tie-dye and rosebuds/kimono-sleeves/crochet was pretty interesting) in attractive colors you would not normally wear, in a fine knit with a hint of stretch. For example, I get much use out of my red cardigan even though it is not a color I normally wear: it is a block of color that contrasts with the colors I normally favor in my outfits. Yes, you could match blue with blue, but not only is this boring, it is actually less versatile. Deliberate opposition will work with more outfits, and because the shape is classic, it doesn't clash stylistically or take over the outfit. Minimum requirement? I try to think of each piece in this series as it works within a wardrobe, not merely "ooo pretty!", only The Splendid Blouse and The Sublime Frock fall into this latter category. Much depends on the palette of your wardrobe, because The Soigné Cardigan should provide contrast. If you never stray from neutrals, perhaps one or two is enough. Just imagine that sea green against some greys, for example. Labels: an array ecumenical |

October 28, 2007 2:29 PM,
Hey Dain, I just wanted to ask for some advise. I just bought this great new red top from Banana Republic that I absolutely love. But I've never really owned a red top before, and I don't really know exactly what o wear it with. Any tips?

Hey Rachel,
Well, I think red is more an attitude than anything else. I own only one red top myself, since I tend to wear my cardigan only as a layer. But I would recommend olive bottoms with some texture (tweedy pencil skirt, corduroys), so long as you avoid anything too green (Christmas). A white skirt might be pretty. And red, navy, and beige make a good combination. Another possibility is going tonal with plum. And gold jewelry.
