Posted by Dain, Wednesday, October 24, 2007 6:10 AM (Eastern) ![]() The Splendid Blouse comes in many forms of embellishment to suit every taste, which I have attempted to demonstrate to some degree above (after hours of browsing): not only work/play/evening blouses, but stylistic variations on "classic", "edgy", or "femme" (row by row). Though there are women who can work red pants or a leopard-print skirt like neutrals, I prefer plainer bottoms and busier tops. Not only is it easier to find decorative tops, but the stress of sourcing a fit that flatters generally leads to simple bottoms. Additionally, tops make more of an impression, so you get far more mileage out of a single bottom than you will from any top. The Splendid Blouse is one of my favorite things; with the exception of accessories and a dress or two, I find they have the most character in my wardrobe. Each piece is unique in some way. Utilitarian they are not, but many of them have that dress-it-up, dress-it-down quality well covered. Consider the lilac blouse (my personal favorite of the bunch). For work, I'd play up the primly secretarial tailoring: white blazer, The Fancy Trouser, black pumps, cocktail ring. Alternatively, I could amp up the sex appeal with a layered peekaboo effect (as it's sheer, with an inset): The Layering Camisole over The Black Bra, The Casual Pant in a sea blue corduroy, and a slinky snakeskin boot. Or, a hyperfeminine 50s silhouette: leopard-print cardigan, swingy emerald skirt, and espadrilles. Or, Parisian street chic: navy tweed blazer, grey jeans, beat-up Converse. For this reason, though I own perhaps two of The Simple Tee and three of The Crisp Buttondown (which, as I've said before, is really a simplified blouse), The Splendid Blouse numbers nearly a dozen.
