An Array Ecumenical: The Sublime Frock

Posted by Dain, Saturday, October 27, 2007 1:29 PM (Eastern)

Now that we have covered all the necessary intimates, bottoms, and tops (only layers, outerwear, and accessories left to go!), it is finally time for the dress. In this age of $200 jeans and $100 tees, it may appall some (who? I don't know these people...) to hear that dresses are far superior.
  1. They are easier to wear: just throw it on with nice shoes, and since it's a one-piece, matching is a minimal concern. Some dresses, particularly anything bias-cut, do require heels, but I prefer to wear long dresses with flats. Summery versions get espadrilles (which are surprisingly sturdy), and boots are a warmer option.

  2. They are more comfortable, except in cold weather, though a cardigan and tights will give you more mileage. And, honestly, simply more flattering.

  3. And, just think, you'll wear The Sublime Frock all your life—truly, as they say, an investment piece—unless you choose one too trendy. The current trend is to make them look like elongated t-shirts, which designers call, oddly enough, "tailoring", even though they flatter only prepubescent stick-insect models. I've tried to represent more classic shapes in the examples above, from the spare slipdress to the workworthy sheath to the sexy wrap dress to the flirty sundress.

  4. My main advice to choosing a dress is: when you put it on, you know, you love how it looks, and it flatters your figure. The Sublime Frock. The effect of a dress is instantaneous, though a pair of heels may amend the look further. As with skirts, a hemline of knee-length is most flattering if you wish you keep it beyond your teens and twenties.
Of course, much depends on your taste. I suggest at minimum getting one in your favorite neutral, in a fairly basic shape. You have no idea how much use you will get out of it. Then you can look for colors and patterns that particularly delight you.
