Posted by Dain, Wednesday, October 03, 2007 12:59 AM (Eastern) ![]() Notebook, cigarettes, and the occasional lippie/lip balm. And obviously keys and wallet. You can read a woman's personality by the contents of her handbag, but mine hews to the philosophy that the more you own, the more you owe. I labor to be very select about my addictions; it must be my innate snobbism. 1. G. Lalo marbled cahier (sadly discontinued, best paper and most beautiful covers, I use Clairefontaine now). Between blogging about makeup, I write more serious fare, but I am somewhat eccentric about it; I write in calligraphy, using straight italic fountain pens, because... well, it looks beautiful. I also sketch out ideas for articles when I'm stuck somewhere, write down things I see, all sorts of useful things. 2. If I can get them, it's Gauloises Blondes. They no longer import to the states. I also like Nat Sherman Hint of Mint and Prince, but my everyday smoke is Camel Turkish Gold. What does this say about me? Mmm... I am inconsiderate, politically incorrect, somewhat fatalistic, and a little bit bad. I guess. 3. Last but not least, the obsession that you are familiar with, makeup. Lipcolor is the only thing that really requires touching up, and I have dry skin so I don't need to worry about shine or eye-makeup creasing. To carry more is a sign of insecurity. It is true. I love beauty and fashion, but I hate how women can be slavish about it; it just reeks of insecurity, you know? "I have to be fabulous!". Or what? You die? Yes, I do advocate a certain formality of dress: dresses (as easy as a t-shirt and jeans), good shoes, and red lipstick, and men are sexiest in a suit. But people sometimes just want to be perfect so badly... and it fools no one, like too much foundation on bad skin. I like people who have realized that imperfection is the natural human idiom; they are the ones with stories to tell and lives of their own. Oh, I totally forgot about the credit. I am fond of my Bésame lipsticks. They are so tinily perfect! 4. Sometimes I carry eye drops. For nasty allergies. But only in the spring. Labels: beauty notes, philosophy |

October 4, 2007 3:46 PM,
I'm surprised... I didn't think you were a smoker. Just don't light up in front of Elaine and Kevin.
October 4, 2007 4:38 PM,
O strange! How did you know my siblings' names?
October 4, 2007 4:56 PM,
I like to surprise people. An admission of weakness is as good as any.
October 4, 2007 5:15 PM,
I smoked for about ten years...it is a choice, I didn't know anyone who smoked. I tried it the once and liked it.
It's surprisingly easy to quit, but I can tell ya, the craving never completely goes away, it's something you accept. It's just at one point...I suspect it's to do with age...you start to feel the side effects.
October 4, 2007 5:41 PM,
I actually think smoking is terrible. It smells bad and stains your teeth and people dislike it and it has absolutely no benefit, except for the fact, if you're a smoker, it feels nice to have one. It doesn't feel good unless you already have the addiction, but it's not a buzz or a high as with alcohol or weed, which make somewhat more sense because people at least get some enjoyment out of it, right? Dunno. I quit for a while, and probably could have quit forever, and then I decided I didn't actually care. I can't explain it exactly, for me, it was about being independent from public opinion.
October 4, 2007 6:12 PM,
Yeah I dunno...I never smoked back in Virginia. Unfortunately, everyone else smoked back then, including kids. I knew eleven-year-old kids who smoked, no one said anything... They're stricter now, at least out here they are, but back then and there, kids bought their own cigarettes. No one asked for ID.
I read somewhere, as long as you didn't start before age twenty or so, it's relatively easy to quit. But I don't know if that's because you will have smoked for fewer years, or if it has to do with why you started later in the first place.
October 8, 2007 11:43 PM,
How cool that we have the same cigarette taste :) -- I stocked up on Gauloises Blondes (the red one) while I was in Europe, but I smoked them all - greedy me - and since they don't have them here, I have resorted back to my Camel Turkish Golds. Someone told me to try the new Infused, but it's like sucking air. I like a good throat-beating, 1 match for 19 cigarettes smoke session. Once in a while. Or... everyday. :(
