Posted by Dain, Saturday, November 10, 2007 12:16 AM (Eastern) ![]() Holy crap, this image took forever to put together. But I think some care is required for The Significant Bauble, the item to close this series. Jewelry is a touchy subject, because it is a pure accessory, serving absolutely no purpose except adornment, and as such, is infused purely with the personality of the wearer. Very difficult to put together a summary (by no means comprehensive) guide to choosing jewelry. Given the sheer expense of jewelry, I dare say most women do buy with meticulous caution. There is of course cheaper jewelry; this is fine so long as they never look cheap, which will reflect poorly on you. Jewelry should never be forced to fill in the spaces of a mediocre outfit, but bring an ensemble to life by the sheer intensity of its personality. Hence, The Significant Bauble. It is the fashion equivalent of perfume, unnecessary to life, perhaps, except insofar it serves some higher aesthetic purpose. When it comes to mixing and matching, I'm not very fussy about it, though I am a little on the fence about wearing gold and silver together; I'll admit I find it unpalatable. But stones can and should be mixed, if done with a modicum of restraint: between the staidness of a matching set and err... utterly blinged out. I like jewelry that is worn naturally, even when wearing something as quirky as half a butterfly wing or as bold as a fire-opal cuff. There are quieter options, of course. As for matching to clothes... who cares? As long as there's some color contrast, there's no reason in the world why you cannot throw something really striking and really casual together. It adds spice. So what is The Significant Bauble? It may be as simple as a profound attraction. Or, it may have intense nostalgic value. I also think it should be something that you would feel comfortable wearing everyday, as if it were a stand-alone piece, rather than something-to-throw-onto-an-outfit or an ostentation fit only for the red carpet. Certainly the classics are worthy and generally more affordable investments—only a halter top argues with a strand of pearls—but as I said, there is nothing essential about jewelry; it might as well reflect the accidents and frivolities of life. I do not mean that it must be some encrusted, baroque ornament (indeed, how lovely is that swirl of diamonds embracing that black pearl? minimal styling, but absolutely stunning), just that... How to put it? Jewelry is special. Labels: an array ecumenical |
