Beauty Notes: Juicy Couture review

Posted by Dain, Saturday, December 15, 2007 7:47 PM (Eastern)

My sister, who is in 8th grade, has to some degree been indoctrinated with my snobbism (but I think when it comes to the cultivation of taste, a weird crop that is blighted early but virtually indestructible in fruit, it is best to begin as young as possible), condescendingly ridiculed a friend of hers who thinks Juicy Couture is the final word in style. Instead of rebuking her, I sniffed, "Juicy Couture makes me think of Jennifer Lopez on a slobbish day in LA," because indeed Lopez' patronage of the velour tracksuits was the brand's claim to fame. So, when the SA at Sephora so thoughtfully pressed samples on me, I was a trifle aghast, but I never refuse a sample out of scientific interest.

Here are the stated notes: "The fragrance is a lush mix of watermelon, mandarin, passion fruit, apple, tuberose, caramel crème brulee with woods and patchouli."

Oddly enough, it isn't half bad, given my aversion to fruity perfumes. Yes, it smells cheap. Yes, it smells like LA. But, still, not half bad. When your teenage daughter wants to tart it up with too-short skirts and too-tight tops, I daresay there are worse options for her to douse herself in. On an older woman, this would reek of desperation, a girl you can take home from the bar and never concern yourself again, yeehah! But this has the right combination of overripe vulgarity and insouciant sweetness that is guaranteed to appeal to the very young who have yet to discover their identities and are bound to make bad mistakes, including thinking that Juicy Couture is fab-u-lous.

Now, if you do not mind, I am going to scrub this off.

It was a "scrubber"? (Yup there is a term for a perfume sample you actually wash off, it's so bad.)

There was a sort of jumpsuit trend back in the mid 70's. It wasn't the velour kind, it was...I forget what they called it...for some reason "jumpsuit" came to mind, I think that is what they called it. Usually made by Adidas or a knockoff.

So I think it's one of those things that comes and goes, like gauchos, ponchos, platform sandals...I keep waiting for the puka shell necklace to reappear...or the comb in back pocket thing.
