Posted by Dain, Wednesday, December 19, 2007 9:58 AM (Eastern) I read in the December Allure that the average Frenchwoman spends 18% of her clothing budget on lingerie. lol. Typical French extravagance. It does explain why the lingerie market has so many delightful and expensive offerings, because I can't imagine most American women having much patience with such nonsense—perhaps they have heard of La Perla, but mostly they buy the industrial ladyslings at Victoria's Secret—because it's sexy. Certainly any aesthetic that explores the nude form is potent, but I love the intimacy of fine lingerie, so much in fashion is about display, so secrets are nice. As Julian Fellowes once put it, "keeping our own secrets is not our generation's strong suit". Plus, I have such a weakness for fine lace. The expense, however, is absurd. Here is a consummate example from Carine Gilson, the closest bras come to haute couture: ![]() So, the quest for affordable but nevertheless gorgeous lingerie began. At $80-100, the French label Huit seems to strike a good compromise between value and style, from smart and well-designed basics in skin-friendly "invisibles" (the Just a Kiss line) to more fashion-forward frivolities: ![]() Bras wear out after a couple of years, but I'm such a creature of habit I'll just wear the same one every day, so I can live on two bras, so long as one is black. Support is not an issue, so I avoid anything bulky, which seems to be every kind of functional bra in existence. So they're not practical, but I've never had any right-bra-for-the-right-purpose problems, in spite of the warnings and admonitions of fashion magazines, if a bra won't do I just go without. Rather than worry about invisibility, which is worse than ineffective if not perfectly carried off, it is easier to be deliberate. Labels: carine gilson, closet confidential, huit |
