Beauty Notes: Serge Lutens Bois Oriental Review

Posted by Dain, Thursday, January 17, 2008 8:47 AM (Eastern)

I often find the Impressionists rather insubstantial, but I am very fond of Manet. I love his choice of colors, the flatness of his figures, and his blatant joy in outrage. Olympia is inspired by Titian's nude that I paired with Tubéreuse Criminelle earlier, but without any allegory to shy us away from the fact of... hey, that woman is shamelessly naked. She is most likely a prostitute. And if you are inclined still to think there is something precious, the suggestively erect pussy at her feet is his sly way of emphasizing the vulgarity of this painting. Granted, Paris Hilton does this kind of thing every day without so much forethought, but it seems to me that the nude in art is rather like the rose in perfumery, everyone has done it.

I adore Bois Oriental (I like all the Eaux Boisées, if only intellectually), but then I also really like Bois et Fruits and Un Bois Sépia, and I am inclined to consider this something of a mixture of both. There is, of course, the perennial cedar and the sweet sludge at the bottom. It has the peaches and plums of Bois et Fruits without the clean muskiness, and the dark and stern quality of Un Bois Sépia without the masculine edge of patchouli, and a spice that seems all its own. Overall, it has the quality of a fine dark chocolate; it does not actually smell like chocolate, but it is rich, sweet, and brown.

This is the closest to the original Shiseido Féminité du Bois, but rougher, wilder, sweeter.
