Posted by Dain, Friday, January 18, 2008 8:11 AM (Eastern) Here is Matisse's vivid and joyful La Musique, it has a highly mobile, open style, one deliberately childish. Matisse seemed to exemplify Douce Amére for me, because they both have a carelessness that seems to disguise the very adult intentions behind it. ![]() Douce Amère would be a well-executed tropical fragrance—bright tiare and jasmine, vanilla, cinnamon, tagette (also known as davana oil), white musk—quite sweet and sunny, akin to Datura Noir. But this is Douce Amère, or "bittersweet" in French, so it begins on a contrasting note. The bitter, woody notes of absinthe flicker in and out, followed by a brief flat sour phase, cinnamon blares, the sweet spice of anise comes quickly into succession, and then the fragrance quite stands still as tropical light explodes. It would be just the thing for a rainy, cold day when summer seems far away. The play of absinthe at the beginning is short-lived, but it eases us into a very happy place.
