Beauty Notes: Serge Lutens A La Nuit Review

Posted by Dain, Tuesday, January 15, 2008 5:23 AM (Eastern)

My Latin professor used to say, "In Ancient mythology, there are three major cycles of myth. The first and greatest is Troy, ARMAVIRUMQUECANO... The other, is Hercules, who is a sort of a superstar who makes cameos in other myths. And the last, is the Argonautica, Jason and Medea and the Golden Fleece." Legend has it, after Jason and his argonauts set out on their journey, they stopped at an island to pick up fresh water. Hercules (cameo alert) and his lover, the beautiful Hylas, were on the ship. Hylas wandered away and found a beautiful spring. The nymphs in the water were so enchanted by his beauty that they pulled him under and he was never seen again. Hercules was distraught by the loss of Hylas, and went in search of him so long that the crew was forced to abandon them both and continue the journey.

That is the scene enacted here, in John Williams Waterhouse's Hylas and the Water Nymphs. Obviously, this is not Greece, but it has a lovely sort of eerie eroticism, does it not? Such a lovely picture, with lovely demure nymphs, until you look at the exaggerated whites of their eyes, and they're suddenly creepy.

This is rather like my experience with A La Nuit, a jasmine soliflore that explodes into heady loveliness, sexy and noble, and then, turns into urine. On others, this must be lovely.
