Beauty Notes: Serge Lutens Un Lys Review

Posted by Dain, Saturday, January 05, 2008 12:12 AM (Eastern)

Lily of the valley is a floral I associate with the fifties, in especial, Dior's New Look and the iconic Diorissimo. A white floral, but slightly green and high-pitched, so it does not lend itself as well to gourmandization as other big florals, which are much warmer in color, which may be why it seems to have fallen out of favor. When is the last time you smelled lilies? Even the antiquated violet makes an appearance now and again. The very fact of its low popularity makes me want to wear it, as does my discovery of Chanel No. 19, primarily a green rose, but with lily of the valley as a secondary floral.

A perennial that blossoms in May, the lily of the valley signals the advent of summer, that period when the world somehow seems to expand and take on a sense of vastness and ease.

Though Edward Hopper generally is known for interiors, they are unmistakably American. No other country has that same open sense of space, or that spic-and-span aesthetic so different from the millennial stranglehold of humanity that marks every square inch of Europe. I find Hotel Room quite interesting, very modern in its insistence on the banal: summer and travel as seen from inside a featureless room.

There is an odd consonance to Tubéreuse Criminelle about Un Lys, which isn't really odd when one thinks of it: big creamy white floral soliflores (more or less). But there is no heady intoxication, no hip swing, no sex, in short. Instead, it is lily of the valley (others?) and lilac that softens gracefully under the administrations of vanilla and musk in the drydown. Conventional and well-mannered, just pure loveliness, worthy of a big splashy wedding.

Colleen, I actually think this may be the SL to try for you.

Thanks for the heads-up. I might give this one a try. :)

The lily-of-the-valley scents I've tried are GF Ferre Lei and Montale Crystal Flowers. These are both heavily blended with rose though, they're not plain ol' LOTV scents.

The idea of finding a painting to express a perfume, was a stroke of genius. For whatever reason, I feel I am getting an accurate idea of the scent.

I suspect this is a bouquet of lilies, I just wouldn't be able to pick them out. I also sense hyacinth or lilac in there.

Anyway, now I've finally gotten around to them, I can rest at peace. Send me your address, and I'll ship 'em over once I'm done.
