Posted by Dain, Sunday, January 20, 2008 9:49 AM (Eastern) Or, since it's generally easier, gel liner. Now, don't get me wrong, eyeliner is a great asset to the world of makeup. It is easier to apply than eyeshadow (washes notwithstanding), especially in bold colors, and often more flattering, since we generally need more definition at the lashline than color on our eyelids. When Pat McGrath (who launched this trend) was asked what single product she'd take to a desert island, she answered, improbably, "Oh that's easy. Black liquid liner. It makes everyone look instantly better." What she is talking about is the look on the left, a thin black line that lends sophistication to any look, even frivolous mint/mustard eyeshadows and nude lipstick. But when black liquid liner is applied on every starlet in thick wings, every other photo, one descends straight into clownish. You're probably getting visions of Amy Winehouse right now, but oddly enough, I think she has the larger-than-life personality to carry it off (and in any case, she doesn't care). The thing about dramatic looks is that one sometimes runs the danger of having the look wear you. You must be the kind of person who insists on attention, rather than someone who merely likes the trend, if you're going to pile it on. If you're meeker than that, as I am, then you should stick with a thin line and avoid the wings. Consider this ad for Chanel's spring 2008 makeup collection, Aurora Blues: ![]() As for me, I'm going to be positively retro and resolutely wear powder eyeshadow (NARS Pandora) instead, for that unmakeup makeup look, an antiquated technique, apparently, in this zeitgeist of dramatic-eyeliner-only-please.
