Here is my official pants collection...
If you recall, the whole point of the Closet Confidential series is to pare down my wardrobe, so there is a bottom-line pressure at all times. When it comes to pants however, I find, even when I own more, that I generally wear two pairs of pants at a time. So three may seem ambitious, but it is really a generous figure given my actual habits, so made the inclusion of a dressier pair.
The Favorite Pair A newly acquired pair of corduroys ($78), to replace my aging navy chinos, very carefully chosen. They are a rich sapphire hue (though not as bright as the image implies), which is not a glaring departure from navy but it adds a touch more interest. Corduroy may seem a queer choice, but a dark color and a fine rib keeps it from frumpiness, and it is still more polished than jeans. And the wide-leg cut, closer to a trouser than the boot cut, is more forgiving on those of us with indifferent legs.
The Workhorse Basic Grey chinos, pure and simple. I rarely wear black, never wear brown, white stains too easily to suffice as a workaday bottom, but grey I think is a perfect neutral. Not much to say about them, they're so basic.
The Tailored Trouser I could do without, but it makes a pleasant addition. Mine is a stone-colored wool check with a green thread running through it, and it is hemmed for heels, which inhibits wear, but preserves the effects of drycleaning and an iron longer, though it very warm in the winter with boots. It is useful for more formal occasions, of course, but also menswear-inspired outfits.
The two pairs that experience constant rotation are generally the ones that fit well, but more importantly, wear well: the same basic bottom can last a week, but this never holds true for a top. So I tend towards colors neutral enough to pair with anything, durable enough to weather most things, and cheap enough to replace. In three words: J. Crew rules. The tailored trousers are tastefully refined and the chinos are moderately indestructible. I've dreamed designer, but I am hard on my pants. It hardly seems worthwhile to allow expense to make you paranoid, and there's not much virtue in clothing that wears you.
NOTE: I intended to take pictures of the actual pants (because I want this to a real-life experiment), but I still can't find my USB cord. So I'll update at some point.
