Culture Notes: These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Just a frolic. Tried to choose just a handful of categories (two each in beauty, fashion, culture, and one random one) so as not to overload on images.

Lipstick
Not a lipstick, but NARS Gothika Lip Gloss, a burnished raspberry shimmer, it pairs well with everything and is sophisticated enough to be appropriate for all situations.

Perfume
I couldn't choose just one, but two might do. Serge Lutens Tubéreuse Criminelle, voluptuous and creamy, and Chanel No. 19, witty and reserved—but in spite of their differences, both are extraordinarily beautiful, the absolute height of femininity.

Designer
Yves Saint Laurent, the real Yves Saint Laurent, classical yet subversive. He makes the coolest clothes. This image is so amazing, stodgy menswear pants in slate wool paired with an equally fussy powder-blue secretarial blouse, but of course that is not the first thing you see.

Jewelry
Pearls are my favorite stone, so I favor the delicate, graceful beauty of Mikimoto.

Actress
Ingrid Bergman. So beautiful! So talented! And yet... she was real. Human frailty and glamor equal to all the others without half so much makeup. The kiss scene from Spellbound with Gregory Peck.

Song
I won't deny that "Castles Made of Sand" is probably Hendrix's best song, but "Wind Cries Mary" is my favorite: lyrical, moody and mellow, and guitar as no one else has ever played it.

Color
Green. There's nothing more poetic than a birch forest in any season, my favorite color combination: green and white, the blue of the sky, the fire of autumn leaves.
