All the world knows Chanel and Louis Vuitton as major French labels, avatars of Parisian chic, which they will dispense for a certain fee. A Chanel jacket and a bit of LV arm-candy on your arm is an automatic dose, but not everyone would agree that it is always a good one, least of all real, cool Parisian girls. They are more apt to wear under-the-radar labels as A.P.C., Isabel Marant, and Vanessa Bruno.
If you are looking for a little black dress, the classic go-to number, this Vanessa Bruno dress ($334, down from $557) would be excellent. It's got direction, but isn't trendy, so it will last far beyond a single season. It's smart, too. Delicate silk chiffon has a feminine, breezy appeal, but no fear, it is fully lined in nude. There's plenty of cleavage for sex appeal, but it tastefully disguises less-than-perfect arms and bellies without looking the least bit frumpy.
