Fashion Notes: Momma Needs a New Handbag

Posted by Dain, Saturday, January 19, 2008 2:07 PM (Eastern)

I could use a second opinion. My Cole Haan bag is a behemoth of rich brown leather, but it needs cleaning and the handles are falling apart, and... as I put it, it is a behemoth. I am fond of telling people that, in the puerile hope that they will be scandalized, it is capable of carrying three handles of liquor in addition to the occasional textbook. My friend Ryan calls it the "magic bag". It is absolutely brilliant for travel, with judicious pockets to hide passports and dirty underwear. But as I put it, it is a behemoth, now that I don't need to schlep around a library (or handles, for that matter), I could do with something less straining. Jane Birkin herself confesses she sticks to £5 sporran rather her namesake Hermès, claiming that it was "too much [like] being flung around by Hamlet".

Here is what I dream of:
This is Anya Hindmarch's Alessandra, long past season and easily out of my price range at $1125. Still, it is perfect, a blonde beauty with really, really tasteful embellishments. I generally prefer bags that are very plain, and abhor hardware, so it is a testament to Anya Hindmarch's genius for design (truly, she is the best handbag designer) that it hits all the right notes, and is the ideal size (still might carry a book). I find myself kicking myself for not having bought it. Sure, it is an absurd price for a sack to carry things, but I still have come across anything like it, and I suspect I could have depended upon it for almost all outfits and situations (except for evening, and how often will I be going to a ball?). It is a lesson in "buying what you really love".

I wonder if this Maurizio Pecoraro ($278) might do? I like how it has the ladylike appeal of a frame purse, but its structure is nevertheless softer by virtue of slouchiness (just a touch) and proportion. It could use a little tinkering. I'd prefer a soft green to sky blue (on the notion that it is better to choose accessories that are not colors you wear a lot), but there are services that supply that. The handle is the greatest concern. It seems too short to sling on a shoulder, and I am not sure I would be able to modify that. What do you think? Hold out for something better?

I would hold out for something better. Mind you, I'm no bag authority. It's more of a gut feeling.

I've never bought a bag online though? There are many things I never got used to buying online. I want to see the thing, pick it up, feel the weight, see the quality...see how it looks "on" me. Plus the pocket design is key. I hate fiddling in my bag for anything; there has to be a place for the few odd things you use over and over again.

You're right, of course. I decided against it.
