Beauty Notes: Andy Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain Review

Posted by Dain, Wednesday, February 06, 2008 6:50 AM (Eastern)

I thought most of the perfumes I reviewed earlier warranted individual focus; that might explain some of the repetition.

J.M.W. Turner, Sunrise with Sea Monsters (1845).

Unlike the sumptuousness of another cedar-based fragrance, Féminité du Bois, L'Air du Desert Marocain is utterly crisp and refreshing. Truly, one of the most enjoyable aspects of perfume is how perfumers may create such vastly differing perfumes from a single note—one is like richly embroidered velvet, the other, fine linens. Main impressions: curls of dry, fragrant cedarwood accented by an effervescent lemony sillage, a genuine unisex. On further consideration: dried herbs like petitgrain and coriander, the feminizing breath of rose and jasmine, and a resinous, sweet ambery warmth that rises in the drydown, texture like sand. A beautifully well-behaved no-fear woods, and indeed the nearest reminder is the citrus and Mediterranean herbs blend of Eau d'Hadrien, but with greater depth and longevity (a few hours, better than a few minutes). For added richness, a good rose soliflore is especially magnificent layered over it (I use Montale Black Aoud), one that does not disturb L'Air du Desert Marocain's original aridity. Considering my loud taste in perfumes, this is very "eau légère d'été", but a citrus girl might take this as a pleasing winter alternative.
