Johannes Vermeer, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter (1662-1665)
It surprises me that people dislike amber so intensely, for it seems to be vanilla's basser voiced cousin, as resonant as a cello. But then, popular preference favors the violin. I adore amber—rich and resinous and radiant. On its own, it is almost a gourmand. The best straight amber is Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan, which seems to represent all the aspects of this strange material simultaneously: the tree, the crystal, the incensed powderiness. But this ETRO is not bad: a basic but cleanly built amber water (EDC), with a lovely brittle translucence. Perhaps if you are not as fond of amber as I am, you will find little interest in it, but I enjoy the lack of fanfare, you can spritz and go with abandon (and in any case, I received it for free), like a perfect little black dress.
