Posted by Dain, Friday, February 08, 2008 4:00 AM (Eastern) ![]() Jean-Leon Gérome, Black Bashi-Bazouk (1869). Before Serge Lutens and Chris Sheldrake were the center of shameless name-dropping in niche circles, they created Féminité du Bois along with Pierre Bourdon, which has become a cult classic since its inception, the inspiration for Les Eaux Boisées in the Serge Lutens line and Dolce Vita for Dior (so I have read). Like many a worthy and interesting scent, it has been discontinued in the US, though it is readily available online. In lieu of the utter unavailability of Bois et Fruits (I hate you, Saint Serge, you did that on purpose—French logic), I might consider this for purchase. The sillage has a marvelous dark radiance, like modern-day Shalimar, but its focus is a well polished cedar, richly honeyed. Dusky peaches and plums to delight your nose, plus a delicate hint of wood violets, all ripening into a luscious spiciness. A perfume without any angles whatsoever, impeccably smooth in texture. You'd have to be slightly deranged or incredibly unlucky to dislike Féminité du Bois; it is gorgeously likable in the best possible way. EDIT I just read here that Féminité du Bois was itself inspired by Parfum Sacré, still the greatest perfume I've smelled. Labels: beauty notes, perfume reviews, shiseido |

Nicely written. I had Féminité du Bois a long time ago. Now I want go out buy it again.
February 8, 2008 2:48 PM,
Thanks! I'm pondering this myself. It's good in that it's easy to wear, and good in that it's different enough to be interesting. But I like Bois et Fruits better (maybe). It's all light, while Feminite du Bois is deep dark.
