Lookbook: Nude Lips

Posted by Dain, Sunday, February 03, 2008 2:32 PM (Eastern)

I have been building these Lookbooks quite slowly, one one hand because of the lack of appropriate images available, and on the other hand because I am awfully anal.

Nude lips are not a look I favor; they are a passive aggressive take on the dramatic lip. Nude makeup is not the same thing as natural makeup; it is an expression of imbalance, draining the face of color, leaving only the fleshy contours. Since my face is a black-and-white palette, red lipstick is infinitely preferable. But on another (perhaps blonder, tanned) face, it can be very pretty. Consider this look by Pati Dubroff for Elle (October 2006):

Though I am highly disappointed by her collaboration with Christian Dior, this look is just superbly balanced—simply gorgeous. Here is why it works: as with the more obvious drama of a red lip, the best accompaniment is a wash of shadow and tonal blush. The lipcolor has a satiny, rather than glossy finish, and elsewhere on the face is a great deal of subdued coloration: the delicate touch of a good bronzer and a swathe of velvety, faded celadons, subtle variations on each other, for the lids, a silvery hit in the center and a little more astringent a green on the inner corner. Nothing is harsh, nothing glitters, but everything glows. The brows are perhaps too stiffly groomed, but they are large and natural, as befits such a casually luxurious look. California Girl, indeed.

This is where the look goes wrong:
Too much bleach, orange skin, black eyeliner, and cocaine. Nude lips badly applied are sometimes charitably termed "porn star" lips. Hmm...

I can do nude lips...they do look best with heavier eye makeup, which is why I seldom bother. But nude lips are easier for me than red lips.

I think nude lips tend to suit blondes better. I was thinking of these greens when I posted the comment about the earrings. I wonder if there's something fleshy toned that goes well with that prehnite? Peach pearls? Eh, not familiar enough with stones.

Mmmm...natural peach pearls are nice. They sell dyed ones, but they look dyed.

There is something called peach moonstone but I've seen it only online.

Sunstone is a nice peachy orange but so expensive for what it is. The sunstone I've seen tends to be cut small too.

Peach aventurine...eh, aventurine tends to look cheap. (It is cheap, I'm just saying.)

Those are the only peachy stones that come to mind although I feel I'm overlooking something. The first three would look nice with green.

I used green amethyst for the earrings, finally giving up on the prehnites. Prehnite is yellower...it's hard to photograph because it looks different depending on the angle. I have a pic of some here: http://picasaweb.google.com/thebroadroom/HandmadeJewelry/photo#5141696698874288290

I've been meaning to do something with those earrings...the size of those prehnites is good so it would be a simpler design. My daughter already took the pendant.

Perhaps a pearl on the bottom?

I like a nude lip once in awhile too.It really puts the focus on my eyes, which I like. I have little tiny baby lips and sometimes I feel too much like "Betty Boop" wearing red lipstick.

I'm stuck on my college ap. I need to write a personal statement. Probably something other than "I'm an old,fat housewife, you probably don't want me on your campus."
:-\
GAH!
I want to submit the dang thing by Wednesday.

Dain: mmm...the peachiest pearls I have now are some pink keishi pearls. They're more peachy-pink than mauve-pink, I can try 'em out... I looked on the Net some, sunstone is more orange than peach. Peach moonstone is the best natural peach stone.

I was watching The Closer last night and there was this scene in a church with a stained glass window in the background. Part of the window was this peachy-orange pane, surrounded by a ring of bright deepish green. It looked good that way...thinking a larger peach stone, accented with green, would look better than green accented with peach.

Carol: Well, I'm looking for a job, so there. It's incredibly difficult to not be able to put years of experience raising children on a resume. We've all been conditioned to think of it specifically not as work, since it doesn't involve paychecks. (Or vice versa.)

I looked on the Net...some women have put their child-raising experience on their resumes, but they never say what kind of job they were looking for. That's not a good sign.

Hence...if you're going to make a personal statement, you should include what you've actually been doing all of these years. Your kids are your resume, at least part of it. If you did a good job raising them, you're saving society a hell of a lot of money in terms of us having to pay the prison system, decrease in productivity, the health care system...everyone pays lip service to a mother's love, but no one has the balls to start putting a figure on it or start compensating the people who do it. To the point that women don't want to do it. They not only get money not taking care of their kids, they also get the dignity of society's recognition.

You can check back here on Wednesday to say you have submitted the app. :D I'm applying to Google now...let's see if what they say about them is true.

Oh gee, hmmmmmm, would ya look at that.....some how I just let Wednesday pass me by.
*sigh*
I know, I know.....
I've got until Sunday night to get it submitted.
I can't write that personal statement. I just can't get anything coherent together. I think this was just a crazy idea.

I'm way over complicating things, I know I am. I just need to sit down and right something. Simple, straight, to the point and send it. Then its out of my hands and at least I can say I tried.

Ok. I promise that by 8pm EST, I'll have hit the submit button. Promise.

I know what you mean...but you can't give up. If it's the statement that's giving you a hard time, set aside some time and do only the statement. It doesn't matter if it takes an hour or two or three or if it takes all day. Once it's done, it's done.

I'm doing some stuff today...it's difficult. But I feel you can have a whole new life if you want it badly enough. :D
