Beauty Notes: Chanel Cuir de Russie Review

Posted by Dain, Wednesday, March 12, 2008 7:49 PM (Eastern)

Scarlett O'Hara does not deal with rejection well.

Leathers are unconventional almost by default, and so will never, ever be popular. At best, they might be respected, even notorious. They are perfumes for bitches, and at the same time, the epitome of elegance; a good leather could beat a jasmine soliflore to the ground without breaking a sweat. That is just fine by me; I adore leathers and have attempted most major interpretations (except for Knize Ten) from kittenish Daim Blond to vicious Bandit. Leather has the smooth, subtle depth of amber, but without the sweetness, the probably why Cuir Mauresque (leather plus fruits, ew) had been the only failure. So we're gonna have a brief series on leather, and pair them with great movies. I've decided to start with what is, in my mind, the most classical (and most accessible) of them all, Cuir de Russie.

Cuir de Russie is a perfume from another age, it is the smell of your mother's handbag, when you are very small and everything grown-up has that mysterious aura of sophistication. It smells stunningly expensive, the Chanel signature, but not the least bit vulgar—sensuous rather than sexy. The leather is fairly pronounced, especially in the drydown, like a dry, refined wit, haunted by touches of decadent iris, vetiver, and amber. There's an initial sparkle of mandarin and orange blossom, but it is Beaux's triumvirate of jasmine, rose, and ylang ylang, smoothed over by aldehydes, that lends the composition such beautiful radiance. Rumor declares the parfum's discontinuation, but even in the EDT, it is clear that Cuir de Russie is one of the greatest perfumes ever made.

I've never actually seen Gone With the Wind! There were two groups of kids when I was growing up--the ones who waited all year, every year, and watched it, and the group that thought it was funny and laughed at it. (Keep in mind we were Southerners.)

This was before VCRs of course. I don't remember if it was ever aired more than once per year; it might have been, that's just how I remember it (same with The Wizard of Oz).

Hm, I guess it's actually rather difficult to affirm people's preconceived notions so brilliantly.

I'm sure it was a great movie. Vivien Leigh was superb, from the scenes I have watched.

It's just different, if you live where the war was fought. And it's different for the people who lost the war. After a while it's like, either you romanticize it, or you toss it. Southerners are either true believers, or the worst cynics.

Yeah, I don't think I ever even think about the Civil War, except as, "that stuff they're always talking about on the History Channel". I guess a loss is more memorable than a win.

And, eh, I saw Gone with the Wind so long ago, I hardly remember it. I just remember Vivien Leigh just being really, really bitchy. lol. That was what stood out.

Yeah, when I was a kid, I thought...what a yutz. lol I suppose I see it a bit differently now, you could see it as a metaphor. The old South as beautiful, yet horrible, in bad need of reform, yet with potential, after all. Clark Gable ain't the answer, anyway.

Is it me, or does George Clooney seem more and more like Clark Gable?
