Beauty Notes: L'Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses Review Posted by Dain, Thursday, April 03, 2008 1:16 PM (Eastern) There are so very many rose perfumes, and to choose one would be entirely a matter of caprice. If you are interested in a pure rose soliflore, really well done, Yves Saint Laurent Paris is already there for your delectation. In any case, I am sick, so no more perfume reviews for a few days. Not much of a video, but an amazing solo. Hendrix never plays the same thing twice. Bitchin' rose, is Voleur de Roses. When I first encountered it in my first forays into perfume appreciation, years ago, I was repelled by the darkening brow of patchouli on fragile rose's fair face, bridged by a tart bite of underripe plums. I was drawn to its poetry—the name, the marriage of opposites, a rose by the same name that smells not as sweet—but the first spritz is a dirty little shock, not some hothouse prize bloom meticulously tended, but a garden torn down into ruin by a rampaging hurricane, more earth and roots than roses. The other day, my sister and I were at Barneys, and with all of my skin space claimed already by Comme de Garçons, Frédéric Malle, and Serge Lutens (a whorish medley, it must be admitted), I spritzed my sister with some Voleur de Roses. We sniffed. Eugh, said I. Ew, said my sister. In spite of years of olfactory training, my reaction had not dimmed the slightest. Some time later, I sniffed, at dinner. What is that? Sweet Zeus, is that Voleur de Roses? That's incredible! Those two notes are in such violent competition at first, like Benedick and Beatrice a-quarrel in a battle of wits, but you know they are meant to be, once they mellow. It rather resembles a chypre. Mm, that's a bitchin' rose. My sister looks up from her chicken. Are you drunk? she asks. I blink. No... This is how you talk about perfume, I explain. She shrugs. Well, whatever. I'll need a sample to be sure, but this might settle the uncertainties I have over Coup de Fouet. =D Labels: beauty notes, l'artisan parfumeur, perfume reviews |
