Closet Confidential: Tees and Knits

Posted by Dain, Sunday, April 20, 2008 2:09 PM (Eastern)

As much I love fashion, I feel it is important to remember that if it is an art, it is a functional one. Clothes can be great in and of themselves, sure, but the most crucial consideration is how they fit into your life. Think about how you wear clothes: invariably some items see more use, usually pieces that are comfortable, look good, and mix and match well. You'll still need a few outfits geared towards special occasions, like a job interview or the beach, but for the most part, you'd be surprised how stylishly you can dress with a rather small wardrobe. It's all about optimal use and smart shopping, but I have found it to be a very intuitive process, especially since everyone's tastes differ.

So in my discussion of tops, I have divided them by function, how these shirts are worn, rather than appearances or materials. The first are the simplest, shirts you pull on, without fastenings: tees and knits. These are usually prints or a clean block of color, and should be comfortable and not too tight.

These are mine:
  1. tank top I figure only on one plain tank top, as most of my sleeveless shirts tend to be of the layering variety. A cheap seafoam tank top with crochet lace.
  2. short sleeve Privately, I'm not wild about tees, the quintessence of casual fashion; they're more a crutch for the sartorially lazy. Mine is chosen with as much conscious care as any fussier top, to effect a laidback cool with, say, a tailored pair of trousers: a deep v-neck from American Apparel, in forest green (I might try plum at some later point). It's the classic black t-shirt, but slightly off.
  3. long sleeve Rainbow heart henley from Urban Outfitters. A plain shirt makes me nervous. I wear this when I travel, because it layers well, and I don't mind if it gets dirty (the virtue of all tees).
  4. knits A lightweight sweater is equally comfortable, especially with a hint of stretch, but seems a bit more polished. So I have two of these: a lilac wool-blend crewneck (Banana Republic) and a white and green batik print boatneck (J. Crew).
