Posted by Joy Rothke, Saturday, May 03, 2008 8:30 PM (Eastern) BASICS email: jrothkeatgmail.com (modified) age and location: 55, Southern California. affiliations: I was born in Queens, New York in the waning months of the first Eisenhower administration. Moved to Southern California at 4; stayed until college (Arizona State University, 1974); returned for a couple of years; moved to San Francisco and stayed for 23 years, except for a one- year Manhattan interlude in the mid-1980s. Married late and moved to La Fortuna, Costa Rica in 2002; back to Southern California in 2005. Next stop TBD. skin type: mostly normal to dry, with a mild touch of rosacea on my cheeks. coloring: medium skin and curly dark brown hair that's a variety of colors, including about 20 percent gray. I decided last November to eschew chemical dyes after seeing my cousin's beautiful gray hair. Cool of skin and cool of clothing tones. I love all shades of blue and most cool shades of green. FAVORITES books: Many, but my first favorite was Little Women. I still love the March sisters, especially Jo. The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon are my favorite books. I love historical fiction. music: Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen are my favorites, and I never tire of them. I'm also partial to sensitive singer/songwriters, including Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt, Nancy Griffith, Lyle Lovett, et al. I love Celtic music, contemporary and traditional. films & TV: The Twilight Zone is the greatest TV show of all time. Sunset Boulevard is my favorite older movie; Truly, Madly, Deeply my favorite recent movie. Richard Chamberlain has been my TV boyfriend, since 1963, making me, I believe, his most loyal and long-standing fan. brands: I have almost no brand loyalty for clothing brands, but I like anything made of PolarFleece. I hate to dress up and I have never (not ever) worn a pair of high heels. Most of my favorite clothes come from REI, L.L. Bean and Cabela's; 90 percent of my shoes are either Crocs, Keens, Birkenstocks, Tevas and Saucony sneakers. animals: Dogs, especially small dogs. Most especially my Min Pin, Orla Bean. I'm also quite fond of birds. place: Yukon Territory, Canada. Q&A What are three things you'd like to do before you die? Live in Scotland, write a best-selling novel and achieve enlightenment. How did you get into beauty and fashion? Despite my casual approach to fashion, I've been fascinated by perfume and skincare since girlhood. Back when my cohorts were tanning with baby oil and reflectors, I was indoors applying sun block and eye cream. I knew it would pay off thirty years down the road. I always use fragrance, despite having a rather poor sense of smell. While I can't stand the weather in the tropics, I love tropical fragrances like jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and frangipani. Describe your perfect dinner party, the meal and the guests: Poolside bbq with Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Shakespeare, Leonardo and me. I'd leave the menu to the caterers, and make sure there was a full bar. Which ten products would you bring a desert island? I think I'd be practical and bring: many tubes and tins of lip balm; aloe vera gel; Aleve; disinfectant; a Leatherman; a fire starter; broad-brimmed hat; a bolt of Gore-Tex; water filter; complete works of Shakespeare. What were you in another life? I'd like to say a princess, but I was probably hoeing potatoes beyond the Pale. How do you take your coffee? In the morning, with cream and two sugars. (After a lifetime of artificial sweetener use, I've returned to good old sugar.) In the PM, cream only. Labels: the sketchbook |
