Beauty Notes: Comme de Garçons Series 2: Red Carnation Review

Posted by Dain, Thursday, May 01, 2008 12:38 AM (Eastern)

Garter belts are sooo sexy. But it's weird to wear one, isn't it?

Like the indole hidden deep within jasmine, eugenol resides in the humble carnation, the same that give cloves their fire. Consequently, carnation can add bite to compositions as varied as Guerlain Après L'Ondée and Caron Tabac Blond. Alternatively, you can amplify the spice by loading the juice with cloves and pepper, which fans the spark into a blaze: consider YSL Opium (methinks I should revisit that one) and this particular Comme de Garçons.

I like strange perfumes—No. 19 is strange, Mitsouko is strange, Ormonde Woman is really strange—but I'm not sure about a house that pursues the strange as a raison d'être. Carnation definitely has the quality of the deliberately bizarre: the flower is flat and plastic, a light dusting of powder, cloves saturated in honey, and... err... I definitely smell a Bloody Mary, the same accord as Harissa. All the same, it's not quite surreal, within the abstracted vision, you can still recognize the carnation for what it is. This video is eerily perfect for Carnation: it's the same old in-and-out, really, but so blatant, and the music itself, so stylized and synthetic. All the same, I prefer Coup de Fouet for my dose of wicked carnations; she'd never need to justify her love, I think.

I share your love for strange and for spicy eugenol.
Myself I had tied this clip to Parfum de Peau by Montana (but the whole association rested on Wallis)

Re: your question.
Not really ;-)

Hi! It's good to see you. : )

Raunch is perhaps more accurate in terms of subject matter, but I tend to choose more vague evocations.
