Most Wanted: Tender is the Light

Posted by Dain, Friday, May 02, 2008 12:09 AM (Eastern)

Ah, with all due apologies to Fitzgerald. To celebrate the return of the sun, here are five things that I especially covet, according to this theme: luxury attenuated into ethereality.

Wondrously organic in sumptuous rose gold, this Lucifer Vir Honestus Micro Chain ($4850) haunts my dreams. Though it could carry even the most ornate pendants without shame, I'd wear it alone, as an antidote against the noxious dominion of the excessive accessory. Pourquoi pas rien? Simplicity can be as powerful as excess, so long as it has the substance. Plus, you could wear it forever—literally.

Talk about white heat, this Carine Gilson Chemise ($745) will fill both men and women with lust, for rather different reasons. Matte white georgette trimmed with handmade lace, never has such utter delicacy and sensuality come together in such harmony.

As much as I admire various hesperidic perfumes in theory—Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien, Hermès Un Jardin Sur La Nil, and the ur-citrus Chanel Cristalle—I've never craved the fresh and crisp. Until now. Maybe it's the rose, maybe it's the hay, but Frédéric Malle Bigarade Concentrée ($130) is citrus with depth and longevity.

Alber Elbaz is my favorite designer: he makes clothes that are technically exquisite but also eminently wearable, subtly tasteful and always, always about the woman, rather than the clothes. Most high-end designers are quite the opposite. The whole show is gorgeous; please watch it, the way the clothes move sends my heart all a-flutter, and you know I wouldn't say that lightly.

Though it's the height of absurdity, you've got to admit that if ever a pair of flip flops deserves the sticker shock, it's Manolo Blahnik Papila ($615). Fit for a Greek goddess, you may never see a pair of flip flops like this again. Ethereal luxury, indeed.

WATCH I've been watching Cat on a Hot Tin Roof obsessively. All summer and emotions, initially the characters may grate on you, but ultimately they surprise you with their poignancy. My choice of the Carine Gilson slip shown above was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor's.
LISTEN Motown rocks, 'nuff said. "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb is a bit like walking through a hot city street, with all the summer sounds all around you: kids shrieking from the town pool, cars honking, people chatting on their doorsteps.
READ In Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic, Dune, you'll find tightly wound politics on a dessicated, spice-laden world. You'll get thirsty just reading.
