Beauty Notes: Balmain Jolie Madame (Vintage) Review Posted by Dain, Friday, March 21, 2008 3:02 PM (Eastern) "Dry your eyes, baby, it's out of character." Jolie Madame is a leather chypre that thrives in the sultry, humid air of the tropics. Silky petals of gardenia, neroli, jasmine, and tuberose seem to lend a sweet, sunny brightness to the opening, but when night comes, it reveals a darker side, a fine, supple leather shadowed by vetiver, oakmoss, and castoreum. From the same nose of Bandit, Germaine Cellier, the composition is an exhibition of restraint, paradox it may be, like a woman of great poise whom everyone knows is no virgin. Jolie Madame, indeed. It reminds me of the demure and angelic Kelly Calèche, without any "off" sensations. I have been told by the lady who sent me this sample that the vintage and reorchestration are miles apart, which is rather sad. I'm not interested in the hunt.
