Beauty Notes: Update on TESS Skincare
Posted by Dain, Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:09 PM (Eastern)

A few months ago, I reviewed Tess skincare, a teen-oriented line that was basic, pleasant, and fruitily scented. I passed it onto my sister, to see how it suits a real teen. I am happy to report, she likes it. She is especially fond of the Rise and Shine Strawberry/Jojoba Facial Cleanser ($18). She also likes both the masks, Magic Mud Eucalyptus Face Mask ($20) for blackheads, and Go Undercover Mask Strawberry Soothing Face Mask ($20) which she says makes her skin soft. As for the Sunkissed Sweet Mint Lip Balm ($16), I've stolen it for myself. If you wish to teach your favorite teen the rudiments of skincare, Tess is an excellent choice.

Beauty Notes: TESS skincare
Posted by Dain, Saturday, August 11, 2007 12:13 AM (Eastern)

Skincare for specifically for teens has always seemed a dubious premise to me; after all, skin is skin, no? But I will admit that TESS is a surprisingly well edited line: gentle, noncomedogenic, well-informed, albeit basic products, with fruity scents (not my thing, admittedly). Overall, I think a gift set for your favorite teen won't go wrong; it'll teach 'em the basics of skincare. For more information, please check out the website; they are offering a steep discount at present.

Sunkissed Sweet Mint Lip Balm ($16) This is my favorite! The tube makes it easy to throw into your purse, the sweet, minty flavor is really appealing, and the rich, creamy texture is soothing. It's great lip balm. It also has SPF, but I do not think it's broad-spectrum (there's TiO2, but I don't think it's in there as a sunscreen ingredient).
Go Undercover Mask Strawberry Soothing Face Mask ($20) This is a gel-type mask, so it's moisturizing and soothing. It can be left on overnight. It also smells like strawberry candy. I rather like it, it's a simple product but it does its job. I daresay this will be more useful for parched winter skin.
Magic Mud Mask Eucalyptus Face Mask ($20) My sister says this stuff stings, though oddly enough my sensitive skin had no difficulties. I figure that since she has acne, and I don't, the ingredients are just more active on her skin. This isn't supposed to be left to dry completely, so it's not particularly drying. It smells strongly of eucalyptus, which is a bit of a departure from the sweet scents of the other products.
Time for Some Zzzs Vanilla Nighttime Moisturizer ($20) This has a whipped, creamy texture, and I think it is badly packaged because it easily dispenses too much (a pump or a jar would be better). It smells of vanilla, of course, not the rich, warm bourbon kind but rather creamy vanilla ice cream. It's quite nice, decent, basic moisturizer: it absorbs well and leaves skin feeling hydrated.
Rise and Shine Strawberry/Jojoba Facial Cleanser ($18) This is a strawberry scented gel with jojoba beads for gentle exfoliation, a great idea for unclogging pores on a daily basis. It's basic, which I approve of, especially since it's targeted at teens. I don't like skincare that pretends at miracles.
Ooh Refreshing Apple Facial Toner ($14) This is quite a nice toner. It's apple-scented, as the name suggests, but it's paraben and alcohol free: Water (Aqua), Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera Gel, Apple Extract, Chamomile Extract, Green Tea Extract, Apple Oil, Sodium Levulinate, Hibiscus Extract. A good toner, I think, for pretty much any skin type except the most oily.
Perfect Pout Strawberry Moisturizing Lip Gloss ($14) This is a nice enough gloss, on the slippery side, the pink tones are so sheer that it's essentially clear (maybe just a bit rosy), and it's moisturizing. But for the price, I think you could do just as well with Bonne Bell, when it comes to fruity-flavored clear glosses.
Shimmer Smile Peppermint Healing Gloss ($14) This I like better, simply because it shows up. The formula is similar, and it's minty rather than fruity, but it's got flecks of white shimmer, a bit like Christmas tinsel. It's pretty.
