The Sketchbook: Joy Posted by Joy Rothke, Saturday, May 03, 2008 8:30 PM (Eastern) BASICS email: jrothkeatgmail.com (modified) age and location: 55, Southern California. affiliations: I was born in Queens, New York in the waning months of the first Eisenhower administration. Moved to Southern California at 4; stayed until college (Arizona State University, 1974); returned for a couple of years; moved to San Francisco and stayed for 23 years, except for a one- year Manhattan interlude in the mid-1980s. Married late and moved to La Fortuna, Costa Rica in 2002; back to Southern California in 2005. Next stop TBD. skin type: mostly normal to dry, with a mild touch of rosacea on my cheeks. coloring: medium skin and curly dark brown hair that's a variety of colors, including about 20 percent gray. I decided last November to eschew chemical dyes after seeing my cousin's beautiful gray hair. Cool of skin and cool of clothing tones. I love all shades of blue and most cool shades of green. FAVORITES books: Many, but my first favorite was Little Women. I still love the March sisters, especially Jo. The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon are my favorite books. I love historical fiction. music: Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen are my favorites, and I never tire of them. I'm also partial to sensitive singer/songwriters, including Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt, Nancy Griffith, Lyle Lovett, et al. I love Celtic music, contemporary and traditional. films & TV: The Twilight Zone is the greatest TV show of all time. Sunset Boulevard is my favorite older movie; Truly, Madly, Deeply my favorite recent movie. Richard Chamberlain has been my TV boyfriend, since 1963, making me, I believe, his most loyal and long-standing fan. brands: I have almost no brand loyalty for clothing brands, but I like anything made of PolarFleece. I hate to dress up and I have never (not ever) worn a pair of high heels. Most of my favorite clothes come from REI, L.L. Bean and Cabela's; 90 percent of my shoes are either Crocs, Keens, Birkenstocks, Tevas and Saucony sneakers. animals: Dogs, especially small dogs. Most especially my Min Pin, Orla Bean. I'm also quite fond of birds. place: Yukon Territory, Canada. Q&A What are three things you'd like to do before you die? Live in Scotland, write a best-selling novel and achieve enlightenment. How did you get into beauty and fashion? Despite my casual approach to fashion, I've been fascinated by perfume and skincare since girlhood. Back when my cohorts were tanning with baby oil and reflectors, I was indoors applying sun block and eye cream. I knew it would pay off thirty years down the road. I always use fragrance, despite having a rather poor sense of smell. While I can't stand the weather in the tropics, I love tropical fragrances like jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and frangipani. Describe your perfect dinner party, the meal and the guests: Poolside bbq with Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Shakespeare, Leonardo and me. I'd leave the menu to the caterers, and make sure there was a full bar. Which ten products would you bring a desert island? I think I'd be practical and bring: many tubes and tins of lip balm; aloe vera gel; Aleve; disinfectant; a Leatherman; a fire starter; broad-brimmed hat; a bolt of Gore-Tex; water filter; complete works of Shakespeare. What were you in another life? I'd like to say a princess, but I was probably hoeing potatoes beyond the Pale. How do you take your coffee? In the morning, with cream and two sugars. (After a lifetime of artificial sweetener use, I've returned to good old sugar.) In the PM, cream only. Labels: the sketchbook The Sketchbook: Daïn Posted by Dain, 1:55 AM (Eastern) Say hello to the writers of The Lipstick Page Forums! Emily is unfortunately on hiatus due to personal reasons. ![]() Snooty (snotty) me. BASICS email: dain.choi@gmail.com age & location: 23 in New England affiliations: Korean by origin, American by birth, raised Buddhist, and a theoretical social democrat—in real life I'm less than enthusiastic about all societies, religions, and political entities, the participation thereof education: Lexington High School (2003), Yale University (2007, in English) skin type: sensitive and slightly dry for most of the year coloring: light of skin and dark of hair, I generally wear cool tones (brown is a nonnegotiable horror on me) FAVORITES books: Shakespeare, Aristotle, Wallace Stevens, Margaret Atwood, and Milton. In truth, there are few classics I don't enjoy. Watership Down is perhaps my all-time favorite book. music: Mostly a mixture of classic rock (all the known contenders from The Beatles to Hendrix, but not Pink Floyd) and jazz, but also Bach, Fiona Apple, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I also have a fondness for the opera. films & tv: Cinema Paradiso, All About Eve, Fight Club, Tampopo, Amadeus, Gosford Park, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Notorious. I watch very little TV, except Food Network, so it's just Six Feet Under, The Boondocks (first season only), and Samurai Champloo. brands: I'm fairly loyal to Manolo Blahnik for shoes, and if money were no object, I'd splurge on Lanvin and Lucifer Vir Honestus, and an offbeat combo of basics from A.P.C. and Les Prairies de Paris. color: green Q&A What are three things you'd like to do before you die? Live in France and design eyeshadows, or become a hired assassin. Two out three are reasonable, I think. How did you get into beauty and fashion? I think when I was twelve, my mother was in a car accident—crippled for life. Finding myself unable to connect with my peers, I found online beauty communities as an outlet. Describe your perfect dinner party, the meal and the guests: M.F.K. Fisher says that six is the perfect number of guests for an intimate dinner, and I'd invite people I admire and would make brilliant conversation: Isaac Newton, Bette Davis, Bob Dylan, Diana Vreeland, and Malcolm X. We'd sip cocktails and nibble on chèvre, then dine on fresh-caught trout, followed by rare beef and wild greens, washing it all down with plenty of Chimay. For dessert? Wild raspberries crushed into champagne. Which ten products would you bring a desert island? Jurlique Herbal Recovery Gel, NARS Gothika Lip Gloss and Desire Blush, Guerlain Mitsouko, Bumble & Bumble Super Rich Conditioner (waves to Emily), Clé de Peau Concealer, Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion (fragrance free), L'Oréal Carbon Black Voluminous Mascara, Primavera Refining Exfoliating Cleanser, and L'Oreal HIP Sassy for some fun. What were you in another life? Ronin. (I seem to have a strange fixation on being a sword for hire.) How do you take your coffee? Strong, with thick cream and brown sugar. What is your biggest pet peeve? Paris Hilton is the Antichrist, the embodiment of modern evils: (1) the cult of celebrity, (2) how fake, overtanned blondes contributed to the objectification of women, (3) the influence of capitalism on anti-intellectualism, and (4) the substitution of quiet decency for mediocrity. Other than that, I hate mosquitoes. What do you admire the most? The power of the written word, wherein all thought and the structures of thought reside. Labels: the sketchbook |
