The first I believe was L'Oreal Rouge Virtuale, which was discontinued some time ago (and appears to have been reincarnated by Lancome; read on...). This was a really odd lipstick. It was matte, and light-feeling, yet not dry or drying at all. The second was Black Opal. Yep! That little drugstore brand targeting women of color. I got a Matte Plus Moisture lipstick long ago. I can't remember the exact shade name...looking on the Black Opal website, I don't see it there. The shade itself was awful on me, it was this super bright coral pink shade...but the formula! Truly matte, truly moisturizing. My gripe was not only with the shade however; the Black Opal lipsticks in those days were highly perfumed. I don't know if they still are. Hence, I did not try this same formula in another shade, but I would have, had they not smelled like a perfume counter. Fast forward to 2006 :) I have recently tried a Lancome Rouge Sensation lipstick, which is similar to that L'Oreal Rouge Virtuale only more hydrating. And I have tried a Chanel Hydrabase Creme. Both matte in finish, both moisturizing. Off and on over the years, I've tried this or that drugstore matte lipstick. Aside from the Black Opal and Rouge Virtuale, I would have to say all of them that I can remember were at best dry, at worst drying. For example, the Maybelline Wear and Go's were beautiful in color but they were dry.
