I was sitting down here to write that the Internet is the singular "place" in the world where a woman is not defined by her role as, well, a woman...the bottom caste in a two-caste system.
Then of course I realized the sheer fiction of it. There have always been "places" where one is taken as an equal, albeit not real places.
When I was eleven or so, I started writing...the Great American Novel, which never truly materialized. Still, no one cared about the gender of writers. That was the first such "place" in my life...sitting on the floor, typing on a manual typewriter.
The second, far more important, "place" was programming.
So the Internet ranks #3 out of 3 such half-imaginary worlds.
