Heady and radiant and surprising, it is a beauty to make you swoon. Given that it was inspired by a vintage wine circa 1270, I was expecting something like a vinery: the soft, sweet smell of the flower, a vine heavy with fruit, before settling into winey woody goodness. Perhaps it is a little boozy, but not so much the booze itself as booziness of the eccentric aunt at the annual Christmas gathering. It smells, in fact, like Christmas: candied fruits, juniper, mulled wine. Or perhaps the forced glamor of Gloria Swanson's vampiric swagger in Sunset Boulevard, the edge of desperation in her swishing silks. Such a magnificent wintry fragrance, a bit of Christmas cheer in the midst of the deepest hibernal freeze.
