I saw a rather unusual set of 3 dvd's: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe...V for Vendetta...and Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector.

Lion, Witch & Wardrobe...I was curious to see if Mr. Tumnus was as red hot as what I'd heard He was actually pretty cute, for being half goat.

Overall, I'll have to admit I was a little disappointed...it's been many years since I read the book, but somehow I felt the movie was a bit too glossy. Then, there are few times you read a book and aren't at least a little disappointed when you see the movie. It's still worth watching.

V for Vendetta...hm. This was an odd movie, sort of a blend of Guy Fawkes, 1984, "graphic novels," a lot of things...a few times it was startlingly accurate, but in the main, a rehash of stuff I've seen before (hard to beat 1984 for startling accuracy after all).

Larry the Cable Guy...one of those movies where the best parts of it are mostly in the trailer. A couple of funny parts, and out of those, some of them would make sense only to Southerners. Not worth renting imo, there have to be funnier movies out there.

I'm still watching our "Thief" tapes...I like it. Andre Braugher is still one of the best talents on tv imo.

I love Andre Braugher! A very talented but underrated actor.

I saw The Black Dahlia - terrible.

Little Miss Sunshine - cute

Superman Returns - I liked it.

X-men 3 - I liked this one, too but I like the whole series.

Prairie Home Companion - okay

I saw Deck the Halls at the theater. It was okay and had a couple of funny parts. Save it for DVD or don't bother at all. You really won't be missing anything.

Movies have been dreadful for awhile now.

I'm reading two very very good books at the moment. One is Don DeLillo's Underworld. I already thought he's a great writer, and I get more and more impressed by him.

I'm also taken away by the Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist's fantastic second book "Handling the undead" about zombies. He's not a hack horror writer, he's an excellent writer who writes horror novels. This book describes what happens when all the recently dead wake up in the Stockholm area. They don't start killing the living, they just automatically want to go on with their previous lives, but how? And how will their relatives react, and the society as a whole? Well, and there is and element of horror to the story too, that makes it even more exciting.

On Christmas day The Prestige finally made it here, and I had booked a ticket. It was so good! A real treat.

Currently, I'm watching the second season of Buffy. Spike and Drusilla! So cool! Also, one channel is showing Ally McBeal from the start. Although she's annoyingly neurotic, I like that they take romance so seriously.

Watched some "Night Stalker" tapes we had last night.

This is the new "Night Stalker." If you're old enough, you'll remember the original series with Darren McGavin.

In the new one, Carl Kolchak is a lot younger and hotter. Plus there is an interesting romantic dynamic with Gabrielle Union, which I like. It's not as funny as the original show, but there is still that edge to it...things happening that shouldn't, guys that don't die even when pumped full o' lead, the newspaper reporter angle...good show.

There's a "Man Vs. Wild"-o-thon today, I caught some episodes. This is where the English guy gets dumped into some godforsaken wilderness and has to survive and find his way out. In some ways, he seems to be fantastically lucky at the right time, but he does work hard to get there, no doubt about that.

I caught a good part of a documentary on PBS...this one:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/monroe_m.html#

What was nice, was they interviewed the photographers who had taken the famous still pictures of Monroe (and there are thousands of them, more even than I've seen). The thing is, of course they are all getting old. So making the documentary now, is the last chance to talk to people who had known her personally (rather than, say, Norman Mailer, who by his own admission didn't have the guts to talk to her).

I put up my new avatar after realizing just how many images of Monroe are now on the Net (it wasn't always like that, used to be very difficult to find).

There can never be another Marilyn Monroe, if only because the reign of the still photographer is over. Before the Internet, still images were next to the only "window" one had to the world...

Colleen, I've meant to tell you, the photo you use is very pretty! I like that it's not in the style of the most common photographs of Marilyn.

I felt inspired to look on the Net, after seeing the documentary.
